How hard is it to learn how to fix PS3's? I was offered a part time job at a local PC shop if I could learn to fix PS3's and 360's. I don't have any (well I've done a back up and restore lol) experience in this field and was wondering how hard it would be to learn, or if there are any guides I could follow. (I have both a 360 and PS3 at home).
Sorry if this is in the wrong category, wasn't sure where to post it.

It's not that hard to learn how to fix PlayStations. I'm not sure about XBoxes. Most common PS problems are YLoD. Which can be fixed by heating The motherboard up or replacing PSU. Other problems is that they don't read discs. This is even more simple. Just replace the whole drive. Done.

From personal experience i'll tell you it's not easy at all. I consider myself pretty well knowledgeable when it comes to computers and consoles. You can't learn to repair the 360 and Ps3 overnight. Having said that, if your willing to devote the time and effort to learn, it will pay off.
__________________I have cracked open 3 Xbox 360's and successfully repaired 2 of them. One is fried beyond repair and the other 2 worked for about a month and then red ringed again. One of those was my personal console and I have been too lazy/busy to fix it again. I also own two working Ps3's(one slim one fat) and will be attempting to fix a friend's broken Ps3 soon. The best way to learn is to read guides people post on how to take apart and repair consoles, and videos help a lot too. There are literally tons of community websites devoted to this. One community I have found particularly useful is the folks at www.xboxscene.com. They know their stuff and will help you if you get stuck. Also youtube has great how to vids on taking apart consoles. My advice is to find a few broken consoles cheap and practice taking em apart and troubleshooting the problem. A red ring or yellow light of death just mean a GENERAL hardware failure, there could be one of thousands of different problems with the console. If you take the job get some practice beforehand! -Legacy

Well 360 are very PC like and most problems come from heat. 90% of them can get repaired with X-Clamps. I have fixed 2 360 so far and were quite easy. As for PS3 they are a bit harder because generally it means you have to replace parts.

The Xbox 360's are very easy to fix. PS3's.... unless you like doing trial and error stuff; they aren't fun. If it's not reading disk's you have to gamble on what to replace. You can replace the laser thinking it will fix it but so many of the damn things are cheap chinese refurb'd piece of craps. Then there is a chance that the blu ray board is bad, which means you need a whole new mobo with a matching board because they are locked.

Sounds like it would be a lot of trial and error.. Would any of you consider taking the job (and explaining you dont know much but are willing to learn etc of course)?
btw: thanks for all the help so far kinda figured heat would be a prevailing problem though

I would take the job. If is a repair shop that's doing it you should be able to get it done fast because they should have parts readily available. So it's not like you would have to wait for the parts to come in and hope they work.
