here i was thinking i would get superior quality compared to DVi

If you have a newer monitor with HDMI inputs I think you'll be fine. The only problem you might have is poor sound from the built in speakers. But you could probably find some other way to get through sound. Like you said, you may can use the mobo's sound as I'm sure your board has an SPDIF out.

I have this set up right in my room wheres the computer and the ps3 are hook up with my HDMI switcher to my monitor. I have my computer hook up to the switch via HDMI (converted DVI to HDMI) on channel 1 and i have my ps3 hook up to the switcher via HDMI on channel 2. I use the remote to switch channels.
For sound, I am using AV cable convert to jack. It works perfectly.
I recommend getting your stuff from monoprice, best price for their high quailty cable and switcher...
Its on sale! (i have the older verison which has 3 channels, this one has 4)
