Well, this isn't exactly fresh news, they announced it earlier this week when they announced the two bundles. I discussed it in passing in another thread (I forget which one), and I compared the two SKUs to the two SKUs Microsoft has for the X360. Sure, you might be able to get some entry-level PS3 gaming in at $499; but only an idiot would NOT elect for the $599 model. So in my mind, the $499 PS3 (and the $299 X360) don't even exist, they are a sick joke played on less knowledgable consumers.

Hey, doens't the cheaper x360 have wired controllers, and a chopped down HD? But im glad their not going with that banana shaped controller that was shown earlier this year. i like the Dual-Shock design.

^ Try NO HD for the cheaper Xbox 360, and I second VulcanDragon, the cheaper models of both consoles are downright stupid, for example the $399 XBox 360 has over $210 worth of things packed into/with it over the $100 cheaper model. So who would NOT pay $100 and get $210 worth of stuff? Most of which is either almost necessary (HD, which itself costs $100 extra...) or highly useful (component cables, wireless controller, each are $50 I think) plus the $399 model comes with an Xbox Live headset and a wireless remote which are nice things which I wouldnt pay extra for but I'm sure I'll be glad MS decided to throw them in the more expensive model.
__________________Back to the PS3, its the same story; $100 extra and you get WiFi, memory stick duo (among others) card reader, 3x the HD space (60GB vs. 20GB, I wouldn't be surprised if the bigger model was either a bit faster or had a bigger cache either) the cheaper model also has no HDMI output which, to be honest, is no biggie: If you can't afford $100 extra, you probably don't have a TV with an HDMI input anyways. To me, for the PS3, the biggest selling point of the higher end model is the WiFi, I have 6 computers in my house so it was an obvious choice for me to get a WiFi network setup here, the Xbox 360 requires me to get a $100 WiFi adapter which isnt that bad of a price, but that brings the Xbox 360 up to the $499 price of the lower end PS3...just something to think about, the inclusion of a built in WiFi adapter on the more expensive PS3 is certainly welcome in my book, all it means is I wont have to go out and find a PS3 network adapter, and Sony's online service is free to boot whereas Xbox Live Gold costs $50 a year so if you think about it, the two consoles are very close in price: Xbox 360=$399 +1 Year of Xbox Live=$50 +WiFi Adapter=$99 Total: $549 PS3=$599 Total: $599 And thats just with 1 year of XBox Live, after 2 years the consoles prices are neck and neck and the PS3 pulls $50 ahead every year after that, surely not everyone cares about online gaming, and PS3's online service will be nowhere near as robust as the Xbox Live system, Sony isnt even trying to hide that fact. Personally, I'll be getting both, and I may have to get a Wii just so that I could give it a shot (at only $200 who could resist?)

Xbox Live is free on the weekends if you dont subscribe. Plus there are a number of free features to it as well that you dont need to subscribe for. Ill see if I can find what they are.

LMAO! Im dumb, sorry about that, for some reason I thought you needed the WiFi adapter which makes no sense, I think it stemmed from me readin "WiFi adapter" and thinking along the lines of "network card" meaning that without it the Xbox360 had NO network connectivity, although I have no idea where this idea stemmed from...gotta stop taking those stupid pills.
