Can I connect my ps2 to my computer's lan ouput or do I have to buy a router to get my ps2 online?

No. You will need to have a router for this. You will need an Ethernet based router for this task and PS2 online. Your modems RJ45 ethernet cable will go into the WAN port on the back of the router. Your computer then goes into LAN port 1 on the router and your PS2 in Lan port 2. Just as an example.
