Default 24 Pin backwards compatible?

For a 24 pin motherboard, do i need an ATX2 PSU or is there anyway to run it off a 20 pin connector?

It is possible to run a 20 Pin PSU on a 24 Pin motherborad but it can sometimes lead to stability problems.

However you might be ok

Take a look on this page:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...er_Cables.html

There is an adapter about half way down the page

It will work, but may not be totaly stable as mentioned above. What MOBO are you getting. The only one I know of that will not work at all are DFI boards. Also it may hinder any overclocking as the board will not be getting all the power it needs. If the board also needs an eight pin connection on it, you should look to get a new PSU.

Stability problems would be pretty obvious. Since I think your going to overclock, which is why your here, you'll start to get random crashes. So it'll probably work, but you won't be able to get much of an OC.

I have a 20 to 24 pin adapter and my 3200+ runs fine at 2.53 Ghz.

I am running a DFI board with a 20 pin connect instead of the 24 pin and it works fine, no issues. Those additional 4 pins are completly different voltages, if those are not there, the motherboard just gets more power from the others. So there could be a strain, but I haven't seen a single issue and I am running a 7900 video card with a lot of fans, big Typhon, and a lot of lights.
