Odd PSU Modification Question - Overclock.net

Can I use the PCIe leads from my SLI cert PSU as the 4 pin ATX power if I change the plug ends and only use two black and two yellow leads?

I am using one PSU to power two mobos and have no need for the PCIe leads..but I do need to split the ATX 4 pins to the mobos. There is an 8 pin lead from the PSU--but I do not have enough plug ends to make up the 8 to two 4 pin splitter...I am already using one PSU this way and it works--but I have no more 8 to 4 pin adapters to use for the next one.

Are all the yellow leads from the PSU 12V and are all the black leads grounds? If so then this modification should work...unless the PSU somehow needs to know and report the ATX lead is properly hooked up..

if you can fit it ,it should work without probs since all the wires of the same color (exept the 24 pin wich I'm not sure about) have the same voltage running on them

Yes theoretically it should work just fine. However becareful and make sure you do it right i dont want you damaging hardware or flying across a Room lol. But yes it should work.

Well I already had some fun making my own 8 pin to 4 pin splitter ( I love my new PSU modding kit from SunBeam LOL) and it just dawned on me that If I could scrounge another two 4 pins together I could make it work from the PCIe leads...now to find another 4 pin plug...

I'd try it out on a junker motherboard first, just in case,

LOL that's all I got left--I wanna fire up the ECS and an 805 for Folding--the ECS doesn't offer OC options so IMO it's a junker mobo for sure...LOL

Yep it'll work, as far as I know there are just 3 hot and 3 grounds.

Can't wait to see the finished product.
