when buying a power surge to plug the computer's PSU into do you have to have it match or exceed the watts of the psu? Like if you have a 580 watt psu do you have to get a 580 watt power surge?

I'd get a power surge that can handle more than the wattage of the PSU. The rated wattage of a PSU is the output on the side of the rails. Look at the efficiency percentage of the PSU, and divide the wattage by the efficienty percentage. For example, your PSU is 580W and the efficiency is 75%. Then, the PSU can draw up to 580/0.75 = 773.33W. Thus, I'd look for something that can handle 775W or so (700 - 750W will likely do just fine, since the PSU rarely gets maxed out).

hmm dang I was hoping for something between 10 and 30 dollars usd but it looks like high watt ones cost from 100-200 dollars. Oops I don't think surge protectors are rated from watts I was looking at Ups ones.

Yes thats not a bad one. Yes you want to get a surge protector thats going to handle more Watts than your PSU otherwise it kind of defeats the object of having one.
