Put 12V Rails together to make a larger power supply - Overclock.net

I was wondering if it would be possible to mod a powersupply by putting together all the rails (depending on how many it had) to make a larger current power supply to power other things such as car electronics etc.

Well essentially the rails all run of the same source it is just split up towards the end (this is how I have read it at least).

thats a good question, i was thinking that too, since there are some great dual rail PSU's out there, but i dont need 2 12v rails. anyone else know?

Usually a PSU will have a limit rating for such rail like 215W max for 12Vrail or stuff like that so you can't have it run more than 215W on 12V rail.

I wanted to get a supply with say 4 rails at 18A each and put them together to make a 12 V powersupply capable of outputting near 72 amps to power a car amplifier or something

Yeah well check the PSU spec, I take this PC Power 1KW for example, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817703003 , +12VDC Rails Total 66A (70A Peak).

No you can't. Like Mr Pink said, it only splits towards the end. In the PSU example I give, peak 12v rails is 70A, that total up to be 840W already, and the rest from those 5V and 3V add up to 1KW.

However, I think you can do that by combining 2 PSUs. I'm not too sure but try to read around.

I still don't see why i can't connect all 4 12V rails to get one larger one?

Because when they spec +12VDC Rails Total 66A (70A Peak) means ALL the 12V rails can have MAX of 70A.
