I have just built a new system. Between the ZALMAN CPU and VGA coolers and the quiet case fans that came with the case I have a very quiet system...except for the PS fan....
I bought an Ultra X2 550W power supply. Its not loud all the time, but whenever I'm actually using the computer the fan kicks into high gear and is kind of loud. I have been thinking of replacing the fan in it. My questions are these. Will it really make that much of a difference? How difficult a process is this? (I've seen guides that talk about the ammount of stored charge left in capacitors...don't want to kill myself lol) And finally what would be the best fan choice for this? I know I need to get a fairly strong fan so it won't overheat....but as I said, the motivation here is the noise. Any help will be most appreciated. |

you can change the fan... but you would be better off scrapping that Ultra psu and getting a real psu. *(ultra makes some of the worst psus ever! they have been known to blow up!)
I would never put an ultra anywhere near one of my systems, and I would never put money into one to change the fan out... even if I got it for free... hell you'd have to pay me money to get me to use one. btw... fill in your rig specs in the user cp

The fan spins up for a reason so if you replace it with a slower fan it's just gonna overheat... don't do it.
__________________If you want a quality quiet PSU look in to the seasonic series. They are insanely efficient so there's a lot less heat being output... hence no need for noisy fans.

I would get a new PSU if you are unhappy with your current one,
Also opening up a PSU can be dangerous and i reccomend agaisnt it.

Guys.... not everyone has the money to drop on a seasonic PSU
__________________and changing a 5 dollar fan vs buying a $60+ PSU is a big difference. I wouldn't worry about the fan speed of the replacement, most 120mm fans operate in the same RPM range. My suggestion would be turn the computer, turn the PSU off, wait a couple hours, come back, swap the fan and see how it does. If it doesn't improve things or is worse than what it was just put the old fan back in. I say go for it. If you are looking for suggestions on fans, Apevia makes some decent CFM ones for cheap or look at panaflo. Either way, don't get one that has LED's, that just adds more heat.

noob! no they don't there are huge differences in fan speeds and the amount of power they draw! You can't just put any fan in the PSU. and, while not everyone can afford a Seasonic they should be able to put a better PSU in like an FSP or Nuuo! do a little research next time

Also LED's don't make "any" heat.
