My PSU blew up. need to buy a new one - Overclock.net

Hi guys.
I have the following machine:
Pentium D 805, Freezer 7 pro cooling
2x512mb ram DDR II 667 - Kingston Value.
Gigabyte 8I945P-G-RH motherboard
Leadtek winfast 7600gs
1 Hitachi harddrive - 160gb SATA II
1 Nec DVD burner
2 more case fans + leds.

I had this machine overclocked and running fine until yesterday at 3.5GHz(175FSB). Yesterday I tried overclocking it to 3.8GHz(190FSB).
After 30 mins in prime95, my PSU just blew up, literally.
I had ColorsIT 480W Powersupply.

I want to buy a new PSU, but I'm little tight in budget, so I'm looking into the cheaper stuff like HEC/FSP/Topower.

I want to buy a PSU that will hold this machine with a 4ghz overclock which is even a bit higher. What I really don't get is how exactly THG people were able to run an even more power consuming machine than mine, which was also overclocked to 4.1GHz! They did it with a GENERIC 480W PSU.

If my PSU died at 3.8ghz, how were they able to run 4.1ghz with a generic PSU which has the same Wattage as mine did? I doubt their PSU was able to supply true 480w, since even the most quality PSUs tend to only supply 70-75% at peak.

Well the hyper type r modulars are offordable and cheap......but it depends on what budget ur on, if it is indeed quite tight. i recommend a fairly decent antec. But dont forget even modulars can be quite good......lol cant believe i jus sed that. You could have had two identical systems and one blew the other didn't. Its all about that certain psu, not the same make. If that made sense....

what is your max price? Sunbeam nuuo 550w is a good price/performance point.

not all psus are created equally. And you said yourself that you ran your psu for quite some time. They probably used a new psu for their tests and it held up long enough to get the benchmarks in and call it a day. That's all they needed.

It's hard to say what's my max price is because I live outside the US. Prices are higher here, and I don't have the variety you have.

I've been checking HEC/FSP/Topower PSUs which at around 450-500w are suitable for my price. However, I'm really not sure if they can hold my machine with 4ghz overclock - for a long time, and not just for benchmarks.

what do you guys think?

Yes! I am getting the 550 nuuo. Seems quite efficient for you. I cant wait till mine comes in!

FOr buget, i suggest the Sunbeam NUUO 550W, great performance for a low price! I am using one now.

Where does the comment come from that quality PSUs deliver only 70%-75% of the rated Wattage??

Well as you arnt running either SLI or CF I would have to say that the Hiper Type R is a PSU that would serve you well and is affordable. :

Chozart: Nevermind that. I mixed up efficiency with actual wattage delivery. About the one you offered - it's a bit too expensive for me(atleast here in Israel).

ENTERPRISE1701: I don't have that PSU in Israel. No distributer here.

This is really ironic.
The sunbeam looks great, but I can't find it in Israel.
Sending a PSU overseas is not too clever, since it will make it cost almost twice.

This is really ironic since my parents came back from the US just a week ago.

I need a 670W PSU atleast, with 32A on the 12v rail. This is really outrageous. I heard this site has good calculations, but really, this is just impossible is it?

According to tomshardware a stronger machine than mine, with the P-D 805 overclocked to 4GHz, only takes 400w.
