So I don't know if this is the correct place to put this question, but I figured it seems to be the closest category.
__________________So about 1 year ago my old power supply died, it lasted me about 3 years. So I snatched up a pretty good deal on newegg for a Coolmax 450W power supply. Now I am having a problem, and I really hope it isn't my power supply, but I also hope it isn't something serious. Sometimes and very randomly my computer will seem to shut off but not all the way. It doesn't happen a lot and like I said is random. Basically my PC will seem like it just randomly restarts since screen goes black, fans are still running, power light is still on, but it doesn't restart. I have to turn off my PC and turn it back on and then it usually works pretty well until it happens some other time down the line. Think this is my power supply going to crap? Or maybe some software problem? I just bought the power supply so it would seem weird. My specs are (nothing overclocked atm) Windows XP Pro AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (barton core) ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe Mother Board 1GB (2x512) Samsung PC3200 Nvidia Geforce 6600GT 2 Hardrives PATA 7200 (120GB and 180GB) My current temps are CPU 41 C and Memory 24 C. This was the relative temperature from last restart. Any help would be greatly appreciated. ![]()

Hi and welcome to Overclock.net
First off, you should fill in your system specs, it will ease our task of helping you out (located in User CP on top of any Overclock.net page). My first guess would be more the graphics card than anything else... have you got any other GFX under your hand that you could try out ?

Yeah, actually I just got the 6600GT...
__________________I still have my ATI 9600. But I had this happen a few times with that card to. I did use driver cleaner when I installed the 6600GT about one or two weeks ago, but I guess I could try reinstalling the drivers again. Also thanks for the heads up with the specs on userCP.

Or, simpler, it could be your system going into stand-by mode, and bugging there... It has happened to me a few times with a laptop, I would order it to standby, but then couldn't get back to normal operation again... Check if your system automatically goes into standby, if yes, turn it off, try it out, and keep us updated

Since you said that it happened with your old GFX, then it can't be because of the drivers... although of course like you said again, you could always try to reinstall the drivers...
Maybe when it happens, you could try to hook your rig up to a TV instead of a monitor, see if anything is on the TV, maybe it's the monitor that's broken... But anyway after confirmation that your GFX is okay, I see no other reason for this happening, except for a windows bug. One word : format ![]()

hey, will i am an it and we had that happen all on one floor it was a virous that had caused it. it edited the regastry and made it so that they were on a timer to restart every five minests. so try if you have dos based anti virous run it at the start up in ms-dos mode. if that dosent work you might whant to see if you hard drive is going out the window that could be a cause to. if that dosen't work. you might whant to try a clean install.

Thanks guys.
__________________Yeah, it is really weird, some days it doesn't happen at all. Some days it will happen just once. Sometimes it will go threw crazy fits where it will happen, and then a few minutes later happen again, and then possibly even happen again. I will run a virus scan, all I have access to is Mcafee though. If it still seems to happen I will try to reinstall the video drivers. If all else fails there is that clean install. I didn't think it was my power supply because it kept my fans running, and the power on...unlike last time when the fans would stop. Again thanks for the tips, hopefully I can figure this out.
