Default how to know when psu is not enough??

I was just wondering how you know when you psu isn't enough? I heard that your computer will random restart, ect ect. My only concern that my gpu recommends 450w. It probably doesnt need that much but it recommends it. And i'm only running a 500w right now. I can play CS:S fine but when i try to play diablo 2 my screen dims sometimes and i didn't know if it was because to play diablo it runs the game off of the disk and by running the cd drive the graphics card isn't getting enough power or what? Any help would be appreciated. thanks guys!!

You could try this as a way to calculate how much your system needs.

^ That website is totally generic and is only a rough estimate. If you really want to know..I think you would have to buy one of those [Kilo]watt-o-meters (forgot what you call them). But I'm pretty sure your PSU HAS NOTHING to do with D2. there is no way it can run CS:S fine but something wrong with D2. Did you try uninstalling and reinstalling?

Unless your running kitchen appliances off your PSU then it should be more than enough to handle your system. I have a 600 watt PSU and it powers my system.

No i did not try uninstalling / reinstalling but i don't understand why that would be a issue because the only thing that changed was my graphics card and i really doubt my GPU corupted my d2 files. Unless you can think of a reason why something might have happend

Your Power Supply might be enough, but it's like using 580GB of a 600GB Hard Drive. It's not very good to push your Power Supply to it's maximum day in and day out. If you have the money I'd get an OCZ GameXStream 700W Power Supply Unit and live happily. You'll get better overclocks, a more stable system, and hopefully no more of the problems running games.
The reason I say a Power Supply is because when you are playing Diablo: II you are using more power than idleing, so when you are playing you might be using 450 or 475 Watts. Considering you only have a 500W Power Supply that's not very good.
The only other thing I see that could fix it would be fixing your ATi Drivers (Catalyst, ATi Tray Tools, ATi Tools). If you have a Retail Graphics Card I'd install the Drivers that came on the CD.

The OCZ GameXStream 700W is a ATX psu correct?

The last thing you need is 700W. My system uses much more power than yours and I am running a 600W perfectly. If you are concerned and really want to up your PSU to be sure it will handle your system then get a 600W.

His system MIGHT be pulling 350 watts down.. A fully loaded Qx6700+8800GTX only pulled 380w down-MAX LOAD (this was on anandtech).. people go wayyyy over the top when guesstimating wattage being used..
