I'm looking to build this machine: http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/...Number=5157526 (asus p5b, c2d 6600, geforce 8800gtx, 2g DDR2 800, 2x SATA 250g, 1x dvd burner)
__________________I'm wondering whether I should buy the PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610 ($190): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817703005 Or the FSP FX700 ($145): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104033 From the specs, it seems the significant difference is that the Silencer has one 12v rail as opposed to four. I've been told that with multiple 12v rails, a single component partially using one line can waste the remaining amperage...I don't understand how these things work, but is this true? If so, I can see the importance of having all the amperage on one rail. Also, what's with the limit of 18-22 amps per rail anyway and why doesn't it apply to PC Power & Cooling? The FSP FX700 has quite a bit more amps on the 3.3v than the Silencer 610, looking at my specs I'm not sure if this is needed. All feedback is appreciated!

thats a really great deal on the FSP, and both are good psu's. i would go with the cheaper, more powerful fsp, although the pcp&c's are really nice.

the FSP is really a good PSU (I speak from experience), but the PC Power & Cooling it just a great PSU. Personally, I would get the PC Power & Cooling, given the single rail design and just ... it's a PC P&C you know When I bought mine, the Silencer was not on the market yet alas.

If you compare the continuous output of the FSP I would suspect it would be a good deal less than 700. PCP&C has always listed the continous output versus the peak output that most everyone else reports. This makes it seem that they are less powerful than competitors when in a real world situation they are not. I would go with the PCP&C.

I've got that model P&C and it's amazing. There haven't been any problems. I'd recommend it. And like BFRD said, P&C only lists the continuous output. I love mine and wouldn't recommend anything else (except maybe the P&C 750...).

I also have the PC P&C...it's a great PSU. If you can afford it, go for the 610. I remember I picked mine up for about $160 though...

It's $155 plus shipping direct from P&C... I just found this to help you out. I know Fry's has it listed as $159, but it's out right now. Anyway, hope this helped.

The amperage on the 3.3V rail and the 5V rail doesnt matter as much as the amperage on the 12V rail. And its best to have all that power availible on one rail, so Id go with the Silencer 610W.
