Default high pitch whine from back of PSU - Type R

hi. I just purchased a Hiper Type R PSU from another member here on the forum and wanted to know if it's okay for a PSU to make a high pitch whine? my computer sits near the floor and is facing towards me. but when I go behind the computer, it makes this high pitch whine. is it just the fan making it whine or could something be wrong with the PSU? thanks.

Probably a capacitor or inductor whine... normal but VERY annoying. Is it the same sound near high-power lines or transformer stations?

This is in most cases normal. When I first got my Silverstone for the first couple of days I noticed a faint whine from the back of my power supply when my rig was powered down. Then it stopped. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing though. Maybe the capacitor just burst...

Edit: They have Hipro power supplies at egg. Or do you mean Hiper? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...SubCategory=58

If your caps burst, you would definitely notice stability issues. The whining noise is due to alternating power going into inductors and capacitors. This rapidly heats up and cools the components. Fast enough to start vibrating... making it emit a high pitch whine. This is normal and does not mean something is wrong. You can hear a similar noise near power transformers.

O ok. Well I don't notice any stability problems, but that's intresting to know.
