Default Avoid the Antec Quattro 850W

http://evga.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1077...1&key=&#114887

Quote:
Thanks for the replies. I think I've gotten to the bottom of the problem....

Yesterday I tried powering the grapahics card totally seperately from the rest of the system with a cheapy 400W power supply I had. Suddenly everything runs just fine... I also tried switching back to using the internal supply for the second power connector and that ran fine too. But no matter what I tried, if the primary power connected was plugged into the Antec Quattro, it ran at super slow speeds.

So, despite it being rated at 850W, and having four 12V rails.... it just doesn't seem to be able to power the 8800GTX KO..... strange.

Obviously there could be something more subltle to it, perhaps the motherboard signals a smidge to late to the power supply on startup, or the 12V rail is down 0.01 of a volt too much, but in short, in this system I can't get the Antec Quattro to work powering the graphics card with enough juice for it to run at full speed.

I've popped an email to Antec, and am investigating other power supply options at the moment.

--------------------------------------------------------------
For anyone who's interested info: I emailed Antec tech support about the power supply issue. This is their response:

Comment: Hello Phil,
Antec is aware of this problem, We currently do not have a solution to fix
this problem at the time. This problem is only with the GTX version of the
8800 series cards. If the power supply is the problem we will replace it at
our cost with a working unit.
We apologize for the inconveinence.

To answer most of your questions: (1) a fridge cannot cool a PC (2) 64-bit OS for over 3.4GB (3) If a PCIe card fits, it should work (4) Resolution, not screen size (5) If you have a question, it is not news (6) Report, not respond to Spam (7) Single-Rail/Non-Modular PSUs are not always better than Multi-Rail/Modular (8) Sequential does not matter as much as random for OS drives

Wow, I just had a less than 6 month old SP-350 die out of nowhere. It was powering a very low load system and just smoked itself in a well cooled chassis. Looking bad for Antec... I have noticed a decline in quality in the last couple years. I used to be an avid fan.

I was thinking the exact same thing. It is one thing to deny a mistake and ignore it.

But to openly admit it and offer a working unit at their own cost is awesome service.

Browny points go to Antec here.

seems understandable to me.
four rails means each rail has only 18 amps.
even with two rails on the 8800 isn't that cutting it close to the amperage requirement?

No, the amps are combined but when combined you loose a few amps. It doesn't just feed off one rail as far as i am aware.

A 6-pin PCIe line provides 75w at most. That is 6.25A. The issue is not cutting it close to ampere requirements.
