well i used the extream psu calculator today and my system config used about 503watts at 100%load and i was wondering if my psu can still cut it, it has not failed yet so i would also like to know what the smallest signs of an overwhelmed psu are? here is my current psu ULTRA V

I would definitely recommend an upgrade. The PSU you have puts out 28 amps on the +12v rail. Your video card alone requires 26 amps minimum.
CORSAIR CMPSU-620HX or CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W Doesn't have to be Corsair. Those are just some suggestions. EDIT: I was wrong. Your card requires 28 amps or more. You're pushing it with that PSU.

The 28A minimum is for the whole system, not just the video card (I'm not sure if that was what you were saying so clarifying just in case). He is technically ok since the Ultra can do 28A. But, that Wintech built Ultra isn't great and it would be a good idea to get a new PSU eventually. You don't have to go and buy one right now but just keep an eye out for a good deal on a ~600W (at least 40A on the 12V rail) quality PSU from a good company like the Corsair vx550 or tx650. And how did you get 503W? I tried and couldn't break 400W at 100% load with the rig in your sig.

Typical signs are fluctuating voltages to near or out of spec levels (+/- 5% is the limit for voltage regulation so for the 12V it would need to be within 11.4-12.6V). The best way to check this would be to use a multimeter measure the 5V and 12V rail at a molex connecter when the system is under load like during gaming or something similar.

well the reason i have 503 watts is because my quad core has 1.52 volts in it, i have one fan controller 4 120 mm fans 2 80mm 1 92 mm 1 100mm and there all 2000rpm+ especially my ultra 3000 rpm 133cfm. but the quad deals the most 211 watts by its self

That would be the motherboard's vdrop and that has nothing to do with the voltages the PSU are putting out. You could use a program like Speedfan or Everest or in bios to look at what voltages your 3.3, 5 and 12V rails are at but it's not a very good option since it isn't as accurate as a multimeter and it is subject to software programing errors. But software readings are better than nothing if no multimeter is available.

Going Broke Overclocking
![]() |
Watts, what is watts to some PS makers, a crappy means to describe the PSs capacity.
Then there is the 70% or 80% or 80+% load capacity where as the PS will lose its stability under full loads. Those among other things need to be taken into consideration like the 12+ voltage line(s) rather amps. Furthermore, a multi rail total 12v+ amperage does not equal the actual combined 12v+ amp capacity. Then there is the PFC rating, if it even has one which provides a more stable out put of energy. So those factors are why, when OCing, more than needed is not a bad idea. The PS seems to be the least understood component and often neglected in the purchase.
