Hey everyone,

When I connect more than 3 or 4 fans to my motherboard, my PC will freeze either on boot-up or when Windows has loaded up.

If I disconnect ONE fan, everything works 100%. This is running my system at stock.

Is my PSU not giving enough juice to power the additional fans? I thought that 500W should be enough for my system.

1 x CPU.
4 x sticks of RAM
1 x 8800GT
2 x HDDs
1 x Optical Drive
1 x Sound Card

3 x 120mm fans are okay and works flawlessly. If I add another 60mm or 80mm fan, the system will freeze.

Any ideas?

Try connecting them to your PSU directly, and not to the motherboard. Not sure how powerful the fans are (and esp. how power hungry), but it might be that the mobo is the one unable to give power to all those fans.

Also, with a working fan combo, can you overclock and put a 100% load on the CPU? If so, then it's not the PSU, since overclocking the CPU draws more power than adding a fan.

Yes with a good fan combo, I can overclock and run Orthos stable at 3.6Ghz.

I guess the motherboard doesn't support all those fans! Kind of annoying because it has more than enough fan connectors!

I will try to get some 3-pin to Molex adapters.

Yep. Those connectors will help you

The connectors on the board aren't designed for very powerful fans... those 120mm's you have probably push it to the limit.

Probably some motherboard makers are also more penny pinching than others.
I wonder might this be something with motherboard's fan speed control.
Many motherboards can control fan speeds basing on temperatures so if there's only one controller circuitry controlling all fans it might be easy to exceed its output power with high speed fans.


Also many fan control panels have max power/current limitation for connected fans. (often wouldn't be enough for high speed fans)
