Default need a new psu

ok, ive looked at doing this for a very long time, and i have some money coming to me very soon and i just got a new job, so upgrades shall commence

chances are im only going to get an 8800; though im not fully sure what i will go with - that is a different, yet related topic.

i need a psu that will run my sig rig if i were to get a beefier graphics card

i have a gateway gt5426e case, and im not fully sure what form factor it supports.

as you can imagine, im not looking for anything pricey, nor does it need to be able to power my house, just my sig rig with a nice vid card.

and btw, i would prefer deals from Canada. ill post my own findings in hopes of hearing some opinions.

Thanks,
- Flatliner

Which 8800? There is a decent difference between say the gt and the gtx in terms of power consumption.

edit: Do you have a preferred retailer?

im not entirely sure which 8800, im more or less limited to price range, the cheaper the better - in terms of my wallet that is lol - im very open to suggestions and plan on even looking around here on ocn for 8800's that are up for sale.

You are looking for something like the Antec Earthwatts (430 or 500) or the Corsair vx450 or 550. If you get a gt or gts 92 the lower watt units will be good and if you get a gtx get the 500 or 550. If you link to some sites you trust I'll have a look around for deals.

i dont often shop the web, but good ol tigerdirect.ca is always on my list.

ive heard good this about ncix.com as well.

Edit: i wonder if there are any psu+gpu bundles out there that are actually worth looking into, the only ones ive seen with a psu paired with an 8800 has been in the 500+ range, which is ridiculous.

Ok, tigerdirect.ca has horrible prices for PSUs . Here's a few deals I've found. Antec EA-430 for $63 here and here and EA-500 for $73 here and here. Another option for budget would be the OCZ StealthXstream 500 for $47 after $15 MIR. It's a decent PSU especially for that price. Also the Corsair vx450 can be found for $70 after $15 rebate or $60 after $15 rebate. And then then 550 is $90 after $10 rebate or $83 after $10 rebate.

Heh, I noticed that too. It looks to me like it's subtracting the rebate twice.

The Extreme Power Plus is a good budget PSU, but it is more like a 420W (they were a bit optimistic). Efficiency and fan noise aren't great, but it is a solid PSU especially for $34. If you don't overclock or only do it a little, you would be fine with that and say a 8800gt. If you can afford it try to get at least the OCZ since it is a better PSU. The OCZ is about the same quality as the Antecs and then the Corsairs are some of the best. You've got the whole gamut to choose from (well, at least from the good PSU group).
