Question 1:

33 amp (VX450) 41 (VX550) or 52 (TX650) That is to run the rig in my sig with a HD4850.

Question 2:

Also I'd like it to cope with my next rig (Nehalem, DDR3, HD5850 spec system, OC'd of course likely to only have one HDD, one optical)

So, do i go higher or not? (GFX cards in particular are getting more power-hungry, at the same time DDR3 uses less energy than DDR2, CPUs are getting more power concious...)


Notes: will order this in approx. 2 weeks or when HD4850 are closer to £110 than £130. Also, as we all know the Athlon X2 is terrible compared to C2D: how much will a 5000+ bottleneck a 4850 and 8800GT 512? (I only actually need a 3870, but I didn't want to buy a 3000 when 4000 are here, plus 4850 is extremely good value for money)

If i then pick power hungry stuff (8800GTX & Q6600 GO) add the max number of hard drives i'm ever going to use and change it to a DDR3 system i get 442 watts. Do i really need a TX650 or can i save £20 and get a VX450, i suspect thats pushing it though.

either of the power supplys will do, But for the futre i would go with at least the 550, although gfx cards should be getting more power efficient with more die shrinks.

A common system with one power dependent vid card needs a high 20ish amps on the 12+ and that recommendation don't take into account OCing. Mid 30a range with duals and again, OCing not taken into account.

Corsair 550 watt is a great PSU. 41A on the +12, and it's only $90.

There is a £10 price difference between each PSU. £10 sounds like nothing, but it means upgrading GFX costs me closer to £170 than £200. I can cope with "a little over £150" but not "almost £200."

VX550 i think it may be then... Whilst I'm here, any news on 9800GT performence/price (last i heard was release 15th July) I would hope that would drop 4850 prices by £10 or so.

X2 5000+ ~70W, 4850 ~110W and 50W for rest for rough peak draw.
(8800GT is less hungry at ~80W, 9800GT probably 100W at most)

Possibly not much difference between VX450 and VX550, VX450 could have been rated easily as 500W model.

There is a difference, 8A on the 12V. It doesn't say much that it could have been rated at 500W. It's rating reflects the trend in 12V heavy systems and being the good rebrander Corsair is, they chose to rate the PSU with 33A on the 12V (396W) as a 450W since that is the way it would be used. By that logic the vx550 with 41A on the 12V rail could easily be rated a 600W. Heck, I've even seen some shoddy rebranders sell 750W PSUs with only 40A on the 12V rail. Any more, the wattage rating is irrelevant unless you are trying to keep on old Pentium 3 running. It's all about the 12V power.
