Today I will be reviewing the Prudent Way 1000w PSU, model PWI-SP1000P.
I received this supply from Mr. Micheal Fung, the companies VP of Sales while @ the C.E.S. show a couple weeks ago. I would like to thank them for their demo unit, and for giving me the opportunity to give their product a "once over". Please forgive my poor resolution pics of this, as my camera is a worthless piece of junk ![]() Anyhow, lets get started shall we? First impressions from the packaging are good, its features are clearly displayed and it has a nice flap that opens to let you see the actual unit. ![]() ![]() Upon opening everything up you can see it comes with the standard stuff, power cable, owners manual, and of course the power supply itself. Now, I received a demo unit that was out of the box at the time I received it - I cannot say if the retail versions ship with any sort of cable ties or other accessories. It has a hard on/off swtich on the rear, and clearly states it has Active PFC technology ![]() ![]() Lets take a look at what cables are provided. They have black mesh sleeving for a clean installation and better case airflow, and they color coded the plugs and labeled the plugs which I found to be a nice touch. 20+4 pin ATX plug (version 2.92 compliant). One 8 pin mobo/cpu plug. One 4 pin mobo/cpu plug. Eight SATA plugs (4 plugs x 2 cables). Eight Molex plugs (4 plugs x 2 cables). One 4 pin floppy drive plug. Two 6+2 pin PCI-E plugs. Two 6 pin PCI-E plugs. (note: there are 2 cables, each having one 6+2 and one 6 pin plug) ![]() Now, no review would be complete without some dismantling to see what it really looks like. I'll start with the fan grill to expose the sticker on the 140mm fan so I could see what it had to tell me. It does not list a manufacturer but gives the following information. "Low Noise, Long Life and Brushless" ![]() Time to pull the cover and really take a look under the hood. We can now see the fan is a ceramic bearing design, and has a 2 pin plug to make for easy replacement for you guys who love modding everything you can get your hands on. I'm not an expert in circuitry, so I cannot comment a whole lot on the actual guts but I can say things look fairly well laid out and clean. Unlike some other supplies I have seen there are not wires zig-zagging all over the place. I did notice that there was only one large capacitor which I thought to be a bit strange, though on the plus side of things it is manufactured by Nippon Chemicon which I believe to be one of the better companies (Japanese made capacitors, should be better than the Chinese brands). ![]() ![]() ![]() Now that we have this portion of of the way, lets fire it up on a test machine and see how it does. The machine used consists of an Asus P5N-T Deluxe (nVidia 780i chipset) sporting a Q6600 and 2GB of DDR2-1000 Crucial Ballistix Tracer memory. For testing purposes I left all timings and speeds stock, and fired up OCCT running under Win x64. The first thing I noticed was this supply was indeed whisper quiet, and in fact during the entire test I never heard it running. Here are the voltage results of over 11 hours of run time. 3.3 Volt Rail: 0.00% Ripple ![]() 5 Volt Rail: 0.53% Ripple ![]() 12 Volt Rail: 0.27% Ripple ![]() Just for fun I went into BIOS and cranked the FSB of the CPU up to 3.2 Ghz (an 800 Mhz overclock) without touching any other setting, and loaded up Windows without a hitch. As of me writing this review it's been running OCCT for almost an hour now with no problems. Now, your all probably saying to yourselves "Where are the damn specs already?" so here you go. +3.3v 24A +5.0v 30A +12v1 20A +12v2 20A +12v3 20A +12v4 35A (PCI-E) +12v5 35A (PCI-E) +12v6 20A -5.0v 0.5A +5 VSB 5A > 82% efficiency rating (80 Plus Certified). MTBF > 100,000 hours. Active PFC. RoHS compliant. Overvolt, undervolt, overload, and output short circuit protection. Lifetime Warranty. 5.75 Lbs. Street price on these supplies are a steal of a price, at around $174.99 and should be available for purchase from my store shortly. End thoughts? I was definitely impressed with the numbers advertised for this model supply. SIX 12v rails with gobs of power should be enough to power even the most demanding rigs. The have incorporated great protection features into a efficiently designed supply for a great price. The "Black Chrome" finish also gives this unit a slick look, and the cable length as well as number of connectors should make for an easy installation in virtually any case.

Nice visual documentation and stability results from the OCCT output.

Looks like a nice power supply. I have to admit though my first impression was "a prude power supply?".

Patience is a virtue...
How about giving longer then 3 hours... Considering in the TOS you can't bump your own thread for 24 hours... BTW: Good review...

Excellent review. Now if i ever see a Prudent PSU for sale it will catch my interest instead of me pushing it aside for the lack of knowledge of it.

They will be available in my store for 174.99 just as soon as I add the product. I have hammered out a good price with the company and will be purchasing direct. Sadly enough, it would be a violation of the TOS to advertise for myself on here so I cannot link you guys once its added =(

Do they have smaller power supplies that they might be willing to send you a demo of to test/review (700 or 750W) perhaps?

i believe 650 and 850, but i'd have to double check those numbers. Can't complain though, they gave their best model to test =)
