In a few short days I will be running an Athlon II X4 (95W) with 2 Geforce 8800GT's in SLI. My power supply is 650w with single 12v @ 34A. Is this going to be sufficient power for this setup?
By the way, this will be accompanied by the 4 hard drives and 3 80mm fans I already have. I will be overclocking the cpu but not the gpu's.

Hmm... I've never heard of your PSU before, but a google search tells me what it is: a generic unit.
Definitely upgrade that, I wouldn't want to put a lot of expensive hardware to risk by using that PSU. What's your budget for a new PSU so I can help you?

Yeah, wattage wise it should be fine for your rig, but... did you edit your original post to remove the brand of your PSU? Otherwise how would meticadpa know it was generic? If it is generic, I have the same advice he does.... upgrade it to a better name brand and probably go 750W or more just for future proofing.

Yeah it's a generic one. Sort of a hurried replacement for one that failed a couple of months back. The specs on this one are the same as mine but mine has different cooling and a pci-e 8pin connector.
Anyway, at the moment I would prefer to spend under $100. Things are going week-to-week right now and I would need to save for a couple weeks.

Ah ok sorry about that. I looked for it but missed it. ~$100 will get you a good PSU. I got mine for under $100 after rebate. I'd stick with single rail units. There is a sticky in this forum that lists the good brands but IMHO Corsair and PC Power & Cooling are two of the best.

Exactly.
![]() For your budget, the PSU I'd recommend the Antec Earthwatts EA650 - $79.99 w/ Free shipping. It's a solidly built Delta unit with 45A/540W , plenty power for your rig, and is pretty well built. The only thing I don't like about the Earthwatts is its sleeving; it has none. If you can stretch your budget slightly, get this instead of the Earthwatts, or the Corsair TX750. It's better than both, made by SeaSonic, modular and has on the 12V rail. It also has a good MIR, so the cost is roughly the same as the Corsair, but it's much better. ![]() For reference, the Corsair is a CWT PSH design with 62A/744W also.

Thanx guys.
It's good to know I can get a decent power supply without spending a small fortune. It's never been something I put much thought or research into through all my upgrades. I'm tired of owning half-assed generic stuff anyway. ![]() Then again that's coming from the guy that turned away from a Phenom 965BE to get an Athlon X4 and SLI setup..

12V * 34A = 408 watts on your single 12v rail.
__________________your cpu will be taking 8A @ stock, the 8800's will take around 10-11A each. This totals @ 30-32A, so its enough, but close. The issue is that with generic/meh PSUs, their power output will degrade as they heat up, and may not be able to consistently provide 34A....If it was a namebrand, I'd say you're fine, but I've still shake with frustration when i recall the generic(and proprietary!) PSUs Dell used to use. Go namebrand.
