Default OK, so I'm embarrassed to ask...

...But I'll ask anyway.

I've bought a Corsair HX850w for my new system.
Please don't laugh, but I'm new to this.

Which way up does it go?

I would have thought it naturally blew hot air up and out the top, but I've seen other cases without vents, so they blow it into the case for the other fans to handle. I have a case with vents above the supply, but would really appreciate confirmation.

the fan should be pointing up towards your GFX.

Or wait... I fail at reading, it should be pointing up so it blows the warm air out of your case.

If you've got a hole in the bottom of your case for your power supply's fan to intake air from, use it.

Otherwise, you're just taking in the hot air from a graphics card, and disturbing your case's natural airflow.

Also, if you flip the PSU, that means that your cables are closer to the motherboard tray, so it looks cleaner.

His case is a top-mount for the PSU. What you're saying doesn't make any sense.

OP:

Quite simple, if your case has a vented top, mount the PSU that way if you want. If it doesn't have a vented top, the fan faces down towards the motherboard.

I have my HX450 (and my HX850,when I get it tomorrow) with the fan facing the bottom of my case,But if your case doesn't have good bottom ventilation then point the fan upwards (towards the graphics card) and like others have mentioned, the PSU placement in the case is important

Default Clarification

I've got a Thermaltake Armor+ which has the PSU mounted at the top rear, with vents in the case on the top. I assume the air is drawn in from the back, and then in this case, blown up and out.

The reasons for my concern was all the labelling and stickers were upside-down, so I had this nagging feeling I was doing it wrong and some geek was going to see it and fall about in fits of giggles. ("Who is Riasroc anyway?")

My older Xaser III didn't have this, so I thought it best to blow it downwards into the case for the other fans to expel, as otherwise it just blew into the top panel 1/2" away just to disperse.

I make videos, so I am planning to make a little YouTube job to demonstrate my utter ineptitude at building a liquid-cooled dual CPU box, so watch this space!

The fan pulls air in, and pushes it out the rear of the power supply.

I flipped my PSU so the fan is down and cut a hole at the bottom of my antec 1200 to suck in cool air off my desk

This.

Preferably the fan is exposed to air as opposed to a solid metal wall though.
