Low quality PSUs like a generic one run the risk of dying (or having a micro explosion that results in a little bit of smoke) thereby running the risk of taking one or more of your components with it (and in some cases, it could kill the entire computer).

But if it's a good PSU but just underpowered, then all that will really happen is your system might not turn on. It's like trying to turn on a computer during a brownout.

But the VX550W is very different.

Oh, and I haven't heard of a PSU killing components just because it wasn't powerful enough. But I have heard of a PSU killing components because a part of the PSU or all of the PSU died due to being pushed too hard.

Uh... he doesn't have 550W. He has 204W, yes, 204W on the 12V rail.

Do NOT risk putting your rig on that power supply, you will overload it tremendously, and generic power supplies won't like that, you're likely to damage the power supply and/or components in your computer.

May I recommend a power supply that you buy? Get the Antec TruePower New 750W, it's usually cheaper, or about the same price as the Corsair TX750, but is more efficient, has more stable rails, less ripple, and some modular cables. It's made by SeaSonic.

Default Update

I got my shiney new 4890 in the mail today.

I plugged it into my 550W power supply using both the adapters included.

I notied one red light on the back of the card lit up when booting. It was labeled CTP on the pcb above the light./

I played crysis for a bit, like 10 mins, and got awesome framerates. The power supply was hot, i could feel it. Then it started making a SCRATCHY sound as if something had falled loose in it. I turned off the Pc as fast i could.

I am gonna buy a new power supply tomorrow called the Cooler Master eXtreme Power Plus 600W. Is this a good power supply? I noticed it has two 6+2 pci e connectors, 8pin CPU and all the others i need.

I will only ever be running one graphics card or one dual gpu card in the future.

Anyone got any critiques on this psu?

thanks.

Lol@Apocolypze01 trying to risk running the psu and then turning it off quickly. It could've snapped instantly. Your lucky it didn't hit you yet.
