Default 550W enough for a single 4890?

Hey all,

I have a 550W generic PSU. It has powered my 8800GT for over a year now with no hickups.

Im wondering if it will be able to power up one HD 4890. It doesnt have any PCI Express power connectors, so i intend to use both the 'single molex-to-pcie' adapters that come with the HD 4890.

It has a mere 17A on the 12V rail.

The other contents are relatively small in my computer. Only one HDD - 160GB, an AMD Athlon X2 4200+, rated at 65W, but the overclocked makes it an estimated 82W. A small, micro atx motherboard and that about it.

I wish for the power supply to last about a month, that way i will have my new corsair TX 850/750.

Thanks

It should be able to handle it but with a generic PSU why risk it for 1 month?

I agree. And since I am an overclocker, I wouldn't risk it even for 5 minutes.

Yes, your whole system will only draw 400W, and that's at full load too. Even if your PSU is overrated, it's most likely not 150W overrated.

Edit: WDF? 17A on the 12v rail? Get that changed pronto!

I'd wait until your TX comes in (although a VX550 will be enough power); that low amperage seems too underpowered, and the fact that it's a generic PSU makes me nervous.

You could have a cheap PSU that doesn't output what it advertises and you could under power your system, causing damage to multiple components.

My 550 handles a HD4890, OCed Quad Core, crapload of fans + HDDs, etc, I think you'll be fine, but if the PSU isn't enough/it dies, you'll kill a lot of components.
