Default PSU Squeeling?

Hello all,

I did an upgrade from a 9800gt to a 9800GTX+.

However, my PSU makes a high pitched, squeeling sound now. My pc is on my desk, so its really annoying to hear it. its not the GPU, but the PSU.

Are there any remedies to a squeeling PSU? This is my Sig Rig doing this.

Thanks! (puts on ear plugs)

If the squealing is coming from a capacitor I don't think there will be much you can do........

That is most likely the capacitors. If you can, try to stop the fan momentarily to see if it is the fan. Be gentle with it, or the problem will be the fan, and stop it only momentarily or you will be robbing it of precious airflow.

Check the psu fan, take it apart and look at it, there might be hair or something like a string in the fan. That would make a constant higher pitched sound.

Not recommended if you don't know what you're doing, lotta power stored in those capacitors. You can get very hurt if you don't know what you are doing. Did I stress that enough? But if you are careful, a fan is really easy to replace in a PSU. First you need to find out if it is the fan or capacitors though.

I would suggest not taking apart a PSU, as even after it has been powered off it may still hold a residual charge. Quite dangerous in fact.

I could be wrong

Hmm.... I have taken apart countless PSU's and never have been shocked or hurt in any way (maybe a cut finger once or twice). I'm not saying that its not dangerous but I really think you would have to try to hurt yourself though.

I am studying to be an EE or CE, so I know how to mess with "dangerous" things.

I temporarily disabled the fan, it is not the problem. Its more of an electrical sort of high pitch, maybe from the capacitors.

The only thing that has changed is the load the PSU is under (i put in a bigger card).

So, what else can I try? The PSU caps, does squealing mean they're going out?

Thanks!

Yes, unfortunately that means they are dying. Being an EE, you may be able to replace them. Couple bucks for capacitors is a lot cheaper than buying a new PSU.

AGG, mine is doing the same thing right now, really annoying, especially since I just spent $100 on silencing my computer, the PSU and HDD are now the loudest components and this squealing is driving me nuts. But I have a life time warranty so should be receiving my new PSU later this week, just called them up and told them my psu is squealing, and the shipped one out for me.
