I'm considering upgrading to a single 4890 and I'm wondering if I'm right to question my power supply that's been nothing but excellent with my 8800gt.
__________________Here's my current psu specs: Fortron Blue Storm II 500w 2 x 12v @ 18a each = 216w per rail = 432w total on 12v 20 + 4 pin, 2 x 6 pin PCIe +3.3V - 30A :: +5V - 30A :: +12V1 - 18A +12V2 - 18A :: -12V - 0.8A :: +5VSB - 2.5A And here is my current system draw (estimated highball) Processor - 95w :: RAM (4gb) - 50w :: Sys fan (3) - 30w HDD (3) - 40w :: DVD ROM - 10w Total: 225w with everything running A 4890 should theoretically draw about 285 watts on load. So 432w total on my 12v rail minus the 225w system draw = 207w on the 12v rail, which is above the nominal wattage of the 4890, but ~80w below the load reported at Tom's: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...0,2262-13.html Am I right to assume that all my components are more or less on the 12v rail, and that my PSU will probably underpower this card? Logic tells me that this is a silly question and I should never get close enough to maxing my PSU to ask it in the first place. Someone confirm my thinking?

HD4890 won't draw close to 285watts on full load.
You will be just fine with that unit. As it has enough wattage on the 12v rail for your whole system.

Yeah looking back now the 285 I was looking at was the global draw at AC, not the card itself.

Though, on average it should be much lower.

GPUreview states that a 4890 draws 190W. So I think you should be OK. I used an OCZ 650W PSU with it for a while, incidentally, and it was fine, though the majority of use was with a BFG 680W. I recently upgraded to an OCZ 850W PSU so it's more than adequate enough.

Corrections:
Fortron Blue Storm II 500w 480w = 12v@40A. RAM (4gb) - 20w Sys fan (3) - 18w DVD ROM - 25w

I do see now on the PSU label that it's rated 480w on the 2x12v so I see where you got the 40a total.
__________________So then why does it still state 18a per 12v and a total of 480w (on the label) if it really is 20a?

Nah, 480W is combined 3.3V, 5V and 12V. It's based on the FSP-60GLY design which shares a lot in common with the Epsilon (-60GLN, -60GLC). It also shares the misleading label. The tech specs say 29A combined for the 12V, but they also hint at it doing 36A under their crossloading diagram and this has been confirmed with the review at jonnyGURU.
The rail layout is a bit weird with the CPU and one PCIe on one rail and everything else on the other. Even with some OCing on your CPU, I doubt you'll have any issues with a 4890 though. Most 4890s draw ~160W while gaming. ~60W of that will be on the first rail with the CPU and the remaining 100W will be on the second with the mobo and molex connectors. I don't foresee an problems with this setup.
