Default URGENT- 4 pin CPU psu to 8 pin mobo?

I have been helping this friend of mine with his computer- recently his power supply went dead, and I told him to buy a new powersupply. He asked me what is a good brand to buy from, and I told him PC power and cooling. I told him they make a 470 Watt model called the silencer, and he went and picked it up.

He just gave me the power supply to install in his computer, I just pulled out his old psu which was dead and installed his new psu- as I was connecting everything back together, I realized that his motherboard needs an 8 pin power cord for the CPU, but this new power supply only has a 4 pin Is there ANY WAY I could make this work? I have a free 6 pin connector that's obviously designed for a video card, and I guess I was wondering if I could somehow connect the 6 pin connector + 2 pins off the 4 pin connector and safely power the CPU? is there anything like this that I can do so he doesn't have to send back this power supply? I also have an adaptor that converts 2 4 pin molex connectors into one of these 6 pin connectors.

Thanks so much guys, this is really important that I get this figured out ASAP

First of all, do NOT use a PCI-E power cable for the CPU.

Second, the computer should run with the 4-pin cable. It just won't get the current an 8-pin cable can put out.

really? So overclocking this way is probably not a good idea? I told him I would try to overclock this computer, but not hard core. It's a 2.6 C2D, I told him I'd try for 3 GHZ.

This is why I'm asking before I try it

ok, so this board won't turn on with only the 4 pin connector. Is there some way it's supposed to be oriented? Right now it's in the right 4 connectors.

EDIT

in fact, when I connect 8 pins from another power supply to it, it will start up fine. It doesn't like having simply 4 pins

Are you sure only 4 pins is required?

4 pins should be fine. Overclocking should be fine as well. You can easily get to 3.0 ghz with that processer.

I doubt it's too power hungry to boot without an 8-pin connector. People can run E8400s on 4-pin connectors so I don't know what's up :/

EDIT

I also get 2 red LED's on his board when I'm using the 4 pin connector, something that doesn't happen with the other PSU's 8 pin connector

As stated before, four pins on an eight pin mobo have worked for me. I don't understand why his isn't turning on.
