Antec HCG 750W Power Supply

review by snipekill2445

I've been using this power supply for over three years now, and it has performed strongly the whole time. It's easily capable of supplying more than it's 750w rating, and has enough cables for serious high end systems.

This is a 80+ Bronze Unit from Antec, made my Delta. It ships with a five year warranty. Antec wanted to build a quality power supply, so this unit uses two high end capacitors from Rubycon.
It uses a quad 12v rail design, with each rail supporting 40a. The fan is a non pwm 135mm unit from Adda.

For cables we have alot to choose from. We have a 24pin ATX and 4+4pin EPS connector. Four 6+2pin PCI-e connectors. Three 3x Sata power connectors, for a total of Nine. Two 3x Molex connectors for a total of six and a single Floppy connector. I found cabling size adequate even in my large NZXT Switch 810 case.

Voltage regulation and overall Ripple quality is very good for a power supply of this category, while it can't match higher end power supplies, it's very good for the price.
The unit passes 80+ Bronze efficiency well, which is good because 80+ Bronze is not only easy to achieve, but the minimum standard when considering a new power supply unit.
For the transient filter stage, we see two Y capacitors and two X capacitors more than what is minimum required, but we see not MOV which is disappointing at best for a unit of this price.

Moving to acoustics, under 50~% load the fan is very quiet verging on inaudible, once we reach 100% load however the fan is quiet loud, but will likely be drowned out by the noise from the GPU(s) as this load.
I noticed no coil whine from this unit at any load, which pleases me as I find coil whine far more intolerable than fan noise. Good stuff.

Overall I'm quite happy with this power supply, it passes it's efficient rating and performs very well. Antec wanted to make a quality power supply and they've done. I'd have really liked to see better sleeving as it is very poor, and an MOV for a power supply as this price. A modular design would have also been nice, but for the system builder who just wants a decent power supply for a decent price that will work I'd surely give this power supply consideration.

ProsCons
Excellent Quality, Many Cables, 5 year warranty. Poor sleeving, non modular.
