Review of the ASUS ENGTX560 DC/2DI/1DG5

review by tarnix

Since this card is not very known and quite missing from OCN, I decided I'd make a review.

I own this one since 7/20/2012 and I'm mildly happy with it. At stock, this card feels under-powered, and I wasn't sure It was an upgrade from my GTX260 on the same technologies. This card supports DirectX 11, something the GTX260 did not. However, games like Saints Row: The Third at max graphics will bring this card to it's knees in intense fights if you don't overclock it.

Overclocking this particular unit from 810MHz to 900MHz was not as easy as one would think, but anything higher is a real trial and (mostly) errors as soon as an artifact-free overclock is your goal.
This card will happily take more voltages if you want to give it some, and is in fact needed if you want to reach 912MHz and above.

At 912MHz with a Phenom II X6 Overclocked to 4.0GHz, this card gives a decent minimum FPS of 18-23 to a max FPs of around 70-80 in Crysis 2, graphics turned all the way up. I'd say that the average FPS I experienced were around 40 to 60.
I am currently running it at 1000MHz core and 2080MHz memory, feeding it 1.087volts, fan all the way up and my temps are at a steady 52?C. No artifacts for 45 minutes. (my ambiants are very low, about 18 to 13?C)

I also want to note that the maximum fan speed is 80%, and due to the fact that this card's BIOS is completely locked aside from Vendor change, You can't really do much about it.
I tried many, and I mean many(!) tools from various sources, from the classic Nibitor to tools coming from a dodgy origin, and none were able to do anything worth changing for this card.

I suspect that this card doesn't have a reference PCB either, I didn't dare disassembling it (yet). So I suspect that a full-card water block is not possible unless one is being machined for this particular card.

I'm trying to sound nice, but I can feel that this review is taking a rather dark turn. Don't take me wrong, this card is serving me well, despite the quirks and the limitations. In a SLI configuration, I'm sure that this card would shine.

Speaking about SLI... This card only has one SLI port, so you can say "See you later" to your three-way SLI bridge.

Also, this card has 1024MB of DDR5 VRAM, which means that if you like to add a lot of high-quality texture mods to your games (Think Skyrim), you will have to restrain you a bit. MaldoHD for Crysis 2 works wonder, though.

Randomly, this card seems to be particularly bad at superposed transparent textures (think Second Life and Skyrim Grass Mods)... The performances are just terrible in those conditions.

Conclusion: This card is good for 250$, but honestly... For the same price, you could probably get better with an AMD card if you mainly use DirectX 11. And use Tri-way Xfire.

ProsCons
Powerful, runs (very) cool,Tricky to overclock past 900MHz, loud fan, bios is not editable (see review).
