Asus HD 7970 3GB Reference
Pros: Fast, 3GB, Looks good
Cons: Noise, Heat
Introduction:
I was in the market for a faster GPU than my 6950. Enter, the Asus HD 7970.
Review:
This is an awesome card. Going from my 6950 to this card was like going from a Civic to a Ferrari.
It runs every game I throw at it on highest settings without breaking a sweat. BF3 online keeps at least 50fps, and games don't dip to 20fps like my 6950 did, keeping the game play very smooth.
This card uses an 8 pin, and a 6 pin connector. It uses a single fan located at the rear of the card, and pushed almost all the heat out towards the rear I/O and out the back of the case. While it cools well enough, it does run quite hot, and quite loudly. I have a custom fan curve, and the fan never goes over 32%.
Conclusion:
If you're in the market for a new powerhouse, I recommend a HD 7970 series card, only makes sure you get a non-reference card, or water cool it to prevent excessive heat and noise.
