ASUS MAXIMUS VI GENE Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

100% Positive Reviews
Rated #15 in Intel Motherboards

Pros: love everything about the board

Cons: Not as durable as gigabyte

im too used to super durable boards so everything seems weak to me.

Pros: Packed with a load of features: SLI/CF support, very good VRMs, CPU & RAM OCs, PCIe mini slot, m2 mSATA slot

Cons: Onboard audio is slightly less than expected, light driver problems

[Scroll down for conclusion]

Reasons (I had) before buying it

I've always been quite an ASUS "fanboy" (this means, take this review with a grain of salt. It could be affected by the subjective view of being a "fanboy"). Probably the reason why I owned a Maximus IV Extreme and I was pretty certain to get a new ROG board, but this time: mATX.

I needed a high-end mATX board for my build. My choices were down to: AsRock Z87M-OC, Gigabyte Sniper 5M and (of course) the ASUS Maximus VI Gene. I didn't like the look of the 5M and I had some bad experiences with AsRock, so the options were quickly narrowed down to only the M5G.

Like usual, ASUS crammed a lot of features in the new Gene motherboard. The most important for mere were:

  • VRMs (for OC'ing)
  • Good UEFI (mainly for OC'ing)
  • x8/x8 SLI support + a free x4 slot from the chipset for a possible expansion
  • Onboard audio (this one was a disappointment tho, more about this later)
  • Looks (I'm using it for a casemod project, which you can find here)
  • 8 S-ATA slots (running many drives)

Of course the board has a lot more features, which you can read more about here

Packaging & Accessories

I did not take pictures when unboxing this, sorry for that.

Packaging was OK, nothing special (except for the box looking awesome).
Comes with standard accessories (SATA cables, I/O backplate, SLI cable, manual, ...) and with some nice other stuff (ROG doorhanger, case sticker, ROG badge & SATA cable stickers)

The main performance is actually great. Not much to say about. Board runs rock stable (except for the little C1 chipset bug, that's not really a problem for me).

The only "bad" thing about it, is the sound card.
ASUS advertises the board like it has "superior" sound, which is not really true. SupremeFX is just an Realtek ALC1150 codec with a nice cover, some LED's, extra caps. Well, maybe it's more, but it doesn't really sound like it. The SupremeFx "Formula" form the Maximus VI Formula board should be better.

This is however not a "huge" problem: That's why I like the x4 slot. With an extender (and my 350D, which has 5 PCIe slots), I could easily install a high-end sound card.

Overall impression and conclusion

Great board. Packed with a ton of great features. Slightly disappointing audio (that where it loses a half star). Performance is very good, but not competition-crushing (that's where it "loses" an other half star)
