A great video card with enough juice to handle the demanding 2011 games at 1080p with high settings - case in point is BFBC2. The video card ran quiet and cool, as tested in a CM 690II case. The design is sleek while facilitating good airflow through the heat sink. It would have been nice if the video card came in a sealed static bag rather than being exposed right out of the box.
Well guys, for my first gaming rig I bought this card. I have loved it since, overclocks really well past the 6870 clock speed and for 20 or 30 dollars cheaper! great size and heat-sink shroud exhausts all the air out the back of the card into your 5.25 drive bays where you can expel that right out of your case.
I liked it so much I bought another one last week..... The performance gain I saw on Dirt3, BFBC2, and WOT was amazing. Some people would say not to Crossx this card but for the price why not! The cards do get loud but only if you do not have great airflow in the case.
Now Im not sure if its the GPU or my CPU but I cannot run BFBC2 all the way turned up. I would like some opinions if anybody would care to share. Thanks for reading, hope it was helpful.
1. Just because you can reach the 6870s clocks does not mean you're reaching the 6870s perf. It has an extra 8 texture units and 120 stream processors. That's a fairly big deal (mainly the texture units) also.. just like the 6850, it can be overclocked too. Well worth the extra 20 bucks. Still, this is a great card, especially in pairs!
2. Your description of how the card "exhausts all the air" out of the case makes no sense to me. Your 5.25" bay area should be your intake, not your exhaust. (The whole front of your case should be intake)
3. Cards shouldn't be getting loud either. Sounds like airflow is a major problem (especially if you're trying to exhaust out your front) Looking at your case, I'm guessing you have the Hxx setup as an intake, and have an exhaust fan in the 5.25" bays? I'm betting you'd get better temps if you'd turn both the Corsair cooler and the extra fan around. Airflow should go front/bottom -> back/top. You're just creating a storm of turbulence and at the same time dumping major heat inside your case from your OC'd cpu. No *cool* air is coming in, and too many fans in too many directions aren't helping.
4. If you have crossfire 6850s and can't max BFBC2 (at 1080p or 19 x 12), then something is wrong. You should be getting huge framerates and never dropping under 60 even with x4 AA and HBAO on. They perform well on par with my 460s and they do it no problem. I don't think the difference in our CPUs is enough to matter (for ref: I'm running an i5 760 @ 3.55ghz). I'd try new drivers (or old drivers.) AMD have always had issues with Crossfire drivers. Care to explain what you mean by "all the way turned up" - what I mean is which setting gives your rig problems? And how low are your FPS? Is it a "stutter" or actually low frames? I play with V-sync on, try that.
Please understand this is all constructive criticism, I'm only trying to help, not to flame. You have a beautiful setup and in my opinion, if you would experiment with different airflow setups you may see better results. Trying to obtain a "positive pressure" with more intake than exhaust will not only keep a cooler, more silent rig, but it will also keep down on dust.
Good Luck!
