Cisco Linksys WAG160nv2 Modem/Router

Pros: Router interface very comprehensive. Very fast setup. Good signal distance.

Cons: Overheats. Need to downgrade to earlier revision to get increased bandwidth.

I bought this router to replace my BT Homehub 2, which was being extremely awkward with my Xbox connecting. Everything else was fine but to connect my xbox even via ethernet required putting it in DMZ and then creating a static IP and dropping it out of DMZ in a hope it connected properly. The router would also disconnect every few hours which wasn't good enough.

I bought this router and originally due to my ADSL line saw no real effect on the speed of my line, the router was fast, efficient and did everything I wanted, but my download was capped at 200kb/s which was lower than expected. It turns out I needed to downgrade the software from 2.00.20 to 2.00.17.

That is the link used to downgrade the Annex A version and after installing this put my download back up to 300kb/s as it should have been.

Recently due to the freak warm weather we had in the UK though my router began to disconnect and it's temperature could have only been described as incredibly hot, I tried hanging it vertically over things or standing it up on other items to keep an airflow past it but it continued to disconnect and would reconnect with barely 100kb/s and the DSL connection extremely low. I was only able to stop this from happening by voiding the warranty and removing the case from the top, now the air can get to the parts that actually need cooling and I haven't had a single issue since.

So in conclusion, it's a good router, it does exactly what you want and wasn't a bad price when I bought it but because I didn't expect to have to downgrade the version and eventually crack it in two, i'm sure you could find a better router for the price. I hope I've helped some unsure buyers. smile.gif
