Fantastic PSU, sadly semi-modular

review by briddell

I have had this power supply for the past 6 months. I made the mistake of ordering a PSU way too large for my system, but even though I am only using 600W max, the HX850 (V2) is still very efficient. I ordered the newer version, with the revised logo and 80+ Gold efficiency, versus the earlier 80+ Silver model. Overall, it has been a very good power supply so, far. It is powering an i7 3770k at 4.6gHz, 680 4GB at 1411mHz GPU core, 16GB of 2400mHz CL10 Trident X memory, and various HDDs and SSDs. While my Kill-a-watt reads only 530W being pulled during load, when I am Folding, for example, I feel assured knowing I have the power to fit a massive watercooling loop in the near future. 850W, even then, would be much too large for my system; a mistake I made while planning my current build.

The PSU itself is a Seasonic OEM. The chassis is what appears to be aluminium, with a textured black coat of paint. The 24-pin motherboard, 8-pin EPS, 6-pin PCIe, and 8-pin PCIe are all hard-wired to the unit, but all other cables are modular. The 8-pin EPS is a bit short, but I was able to pull it far enough to reach the top of my full tower case, and through the grommet at the top of my motherboard. I also have a supplementary 4-pin PCIe cable going to my CPU power for additional stability, and the cable is just long enough. The cables all come with a black mesh material, which is rather low quality. I tore mine off, and will be replacing it with MDPC-X sleeving when I can catch his store open.

Overall, this is a fantastic PSU for high-power systems, such as triple 7950s, or dual Titans, but massive overkill for my needs. Were I to do it again, I would have bought a 650W Seasonic Platinum fully-modular PSU, which is about $30 cheaper, and suits my power consumption perfectly. I am not dissatisfied with the product, just dissatisfied with my choice.

Fantastic PSU, not what I need.

ProsCons
80+ Gold, very well built, strong cables, good warranty, comes with more than enough extra cablesSemi-modular, short 8-pin EPS cable, low-quality cable sleeving, expensive
