I am reviewing Epson as a brand because this was the 2nd printer that I owned and just like the first one, it died after about 2 years. Now, I realize that printers are prone to breakage because they have lots of moving parts, and if the printer was cheaper then this would not be an issue, but for $150, I expect my printer to last longer. The first printer I owned I can't remember the model but this last printer that died this morning was a Workforce 630 all in one model. So I will review the 630 and keep in mind this review reflects the other printer I owned as well.
Pros: Great features. This printer did everything you could expect an all in one model to do. I mostly used the scanner and the fax machine and both worked well for the time I owned it. The software bundled with the printer was nice. The scanning software had many options that most people would never use, and some people would use frequently. For photos, you could do a quick scan which would be about 1 MB large, or you could do a 1 GB large scan which was sharper than the resolution of even the most high end TVs and monitors. I assume that this sort of scanning is for photo editors who wanted to be able to zoom in on a photo. I don't know. When it comes to ink prices, we hear a lot of stuff about price gouging. Epson ink is ~$15 for a standard black and ~$12 for each of the 3 colors. This isn't cheap, but it's not insane considering that if you print a few times a week then this ink will last you a few months. The build quality in the beginning was nice. The printer was solid and only moved slightly when the head would move back and forth.
Cons: But after 2 years, the printer started to break down. I would regularly have to clean and align the heads. Sometimes I had to do 4 cleanings in a row to get black acceptable. Then every week it seemed the paper would get jammed and I would have to fix that. This morning, after the paper jammed again, the printer just stopped printing. The head would move as if it were printing but there would be nothing on the paper. Nothing would fix this. I reinserted the ink and did an alignment and cleaning and still nothing would fix it. It kept telling me there was a paper jam so I'm thinking that a small piece of paper is still jammed in there but there's nothing I can do short of unscrewing the guts and getting in there which I'm totally not going to do. I had a $60 Brother printer in my room for the last year which I will do a review on next, and I decided to make that the main printer because it too is an all in one.
2 and 1/2 stars for failed product after 2 years. The only reason why it's not a 1 star is because it worked before it broke... which is life I guess. Everything works before it breaks.
