Feature packed motherboard without the high cost of comparable X79 offerings

review by mxfreek09

When thinking about Intel?s flagship X79 platform it?s easy to become overwhelmed with the features of a motherboard and its cost. In a market where there are outstanding offers (such as the ASUS Rampage IV Black Edition and the AsRock X79 Extreme11), it is easy to ring the bill up past the one thousand mark with just a motherboard and processor.

A board that seems to be under the radar but can still impress on a budget is the Gigabyte X79-UP4. This motherboard comes in at the mid $200(USD) price range and includes some of the great features that the X79 platform is known for such as the support for multiple graphic card configurations(up to 4-way Crossfire or 4-way SLI). The X79-UP4 paired with a processor such as Intel?s i7 4930K can take a person into the flagship platform for well under a thousand dollars and still deliver outstanding performance.

While this is one of the cheapest socket 2011 boards available, unboxing this motherboard doesn?t feel like unboxing other platforms ?budget oriented? offerings. The accessories included in the box are: Motherboard I/O shield, single crossfire bridge, single SLI bridge, 3 way hard PCB SLI bridge, 4 way hard PCB SLI bridge, 4 SATA 3.0 cables, and the utilities/drivers disk. The motherboard itself also has an impressive amount of features included such as: 8 memory slots that support up to 64 GB of quad channel memory with speeds up to MHz, 4 SATA 3.0 ports, 6 SATA 6.0 ports, 4 PCIe 3.0 x16 slots (x16, x16, x8, x8), 2 PCIe x1 slots, 1 legacy PCI slot, 8 channel audio, and gigabit Ethernet port. The list goes on and on which is great for the price of the board as other similar boards can be $500+(USD).

It?s easy to tell that the layout of this motherboard was well thought out. All of the power ports, SATA ports, and fan connections (excluding the CPU fan connector) are located towards the outer edge of the board which helps out tremendously with cable management. The spacing on the PCIe slots is ideal for multiple graphic card setups. If a multi-card configuration is not needed, then there is still plenty of options for expansion cards with the 1x PCIe slots or even the legacy PCI slot. With the amount of SATA slots, there should be no problems building large RAID arrays without having to get any extra add-on cards to add more SATA ports. It is also nice to have the large amount of USB ports on the I/O panel. With a total of 8 USB 2.0 and 2 USB 3.0, this motherboard should cover even the most demanding optical device collectors needs. There is also a PS2 connector available which should appeal to mechanical keyboard users.

Gigabyte does a great job with providing support for Ivy Bridge-e processors. With newer revisions of the UP4, these processors are supported out of the box. For older revisions, a simple BIOS flash will give support for the 4xxx series of processors. Gigabyte also includes their Easytune software with this motherboard, this provides easy overclocking options, hardware monitoring options, PWM fan controls, and an option to save different profiles. In our case we can comfortably adjust our i7 4930k up to 4GHz without having to touch the voltage and the board didn?t break a sweat.

Overall, the Gigabyte X79-UP4 is an excellent choice for entering the X79 platform. With all the features of this motherboard, the X79-UP4 from Gigabyte truly makes a statement. With attention to details, the long list of features, and the $250(USD) price tag this board is hard not to consider. This board can be added to the growing list of fantastic products that Gigabyte has to offer.
