HP ENVY 32 review from the perspective of a casual gamer

review by johnadams

(Sorry for the potato quality image. My S5 takes HORRIBLE grainy indoor photos)

Introduction

Hello all. My name is John, and I'm a casual gamer. I have owned many monitors over the years. Everything from cheap 1080p monitors, to nice 1080p monitors, to a Dell U3011. I got the urge to purchase a 27" Korean 1440p monitor, so I began researching my next purchase. There were a few things I liked and disliked about each of the monitors I considered, so I didn't purchase one and kept looking around. At some point I came across the 32" BenQ 1440p monitor and it interested me. I looked at all of the monitors in that category and stumbled across the HP ENVY 32. At first glance, I thought it was a nice looking monitor. Upon further research I discovered that it contained the same A-MVA panel as the BenQ, Samsung, and other competition. I was very curious why it was so much cheaper than the competition, so I purchased one from Best Buy so I could easily return the monitor if it wasn't up to par. I purchased the monitor for the full price of $499, but I have since seen it as low as $432 online.

Specs

Weight: 23.1 lbs with the stand, 19.8 lbs without.

Pros

First of all, the most obvious pro. 2560x1440 is a nice upgrade over 1080p.

The semi-gloss finish it nice. No grain like heavy matte finish monitors, but no glare in my computer room even with the light turned on.

The 32" size is really nice for me personally because I have less than perfect eyesight, but not enough to warrant glasses or contacts. With the larger screen size, I can see everything much better in the games that I play. Pixel density was a concern of mine since I could see the pixels in my 25" 1080p monitor that I was using prior to this purchase, but I'm very happy with the density here. The PPI of my 25" 1080p monitor was 88.12 compared to the 91.79 PPI of the ENVY 32. It seems like a small upgrade in pixel density, but I can barely see the pixels when I look closely at the ENVY 32. I'm very happy with the clarity and lack of pixelation in games, text, etc.

The color that A-MVA panel in the ENVY 32 produces is excellent. Everything is nice and bright. I've had a couple of Dell ultrasharp monitors and they have always been my standard for color quality when I purchase a new monitor. The ENVY 32 is much much closer to the color quality in my old ultrasharps than any other monitor I've had. Dark blacks and bright whites.

HP made a really big deal about the viewing angles on this monitor when they first previewed it. They say it has a 178 degree viewing angle. I have no way of knowing if that is accurate, but I can sit in my recliner quite a few feet back and to the side of my monitor and watch it like a TV with no issues if I wanted to.

The speakers are also a pretty big selling point for HP with this monitor. I didn't care either way if the monitor had speakers. I will say that they do come in handy. They are quite loud and have decent bass to them. If I wear my headset too long, it can start to hurt. If I'm alone, I will just take my headset off and watch netflix, play WoW or something like that using the speakers.

The monitor also comes with a remote. You can adjust volume, access the menu, and of course power the monitor on and off with it. It is nice to have because I will sometimes sit in my recliner and watch Twitch streams on the monitor.

Cons

I really don't have too much that I can complain about with this monitor.

The stand isn't very adjustable. It tilts back and forth slightly, and it is a little short to be honest. I'm going to order a VESA mount that has adjustable height, so that will take of the problem. The stand it comes with is all metal and sturdy, but the height may be too low for most.

The speakers are large and are side mounted, so it wouldn't be optimal to buy 3 of them to put in surround. It doesn't bother me since I game on a single monitor and use an additional monitor for VOIP, music, browsing, etc. However, I'm sure that would be a deal breaker for the thin bezel crowd.

Final words

Overall, I am very happy with my ENVY 32. It is an all around great package at a great price. I have very little to complain about, and I would recommend it to any friend looking for a 1440p monitor!

ProsCons
1440p. 32" size is great for those with less than perfect vision. Excellent color. Wide viewing angles. Speakers can be handy. Remote is nice to have.Stand could be better. Not optimal for surround gaming.
