The most noticeable upgrade you can make to a PC is upgrading a hard drive to a solid state drive. This will provide very noticeable performance improvements. Price is compelling now more than ever. This 240GB drive provided by HyperX brand is focused on the low-cost market.

The HyperX FURY has 256GB of memory but the 240 comes from provisioning reserved space. This is useful for TRIM and garbage collection algorithms that most SSD units posses.

I will be testing the performance of this drives SF-2281 controller vs the capability of the OCZ vertex drive which uses the indilinx controller. The SF-2281 is the latest iteration of the SandForce controller. Solid sate drives can extend the life of your PC and dramatically increase performance. They provide higher speeds, greater stability, and reliability.This will be a very interesting comparison. If you want more information on how a SSD works see this article.

The HyperX FURY comes in a small simple package.The package comes with:

  • HyperX FURY 240GB drive
  • Case sticker
  • Frame for device


This drive is compatible with notebooks that require 9.5mm with the frame. This is because the FURY is only 7mm thick. The unit itself has a fantastic metal casing and is extremely lightweight. The case will do a great job at protecting your investment.



The internal device has 8x 16GB memory chips on the top PCB, and on the bottom has 8x more 16GB chips near the controller. The controller used here is the SandForce SF-2281.



The NAND used for flash memory is labeled FT16B08UCM1-34.

The test bench used for testing is as follows:

Here is the data performance dealing with each drives read and write speeds:





In these tests there is roughly a 6% difference between the two drives. They are close in performance but the HyperX comes out on top in both tests.



The boot times of this device are fantastic.Windows 10 booted in about 7 seconds.



One negative thing about the drive is the compression used from the SandForce controller. This will expose the slower speeds during lower reads/writes. This is definitely not what the FURY was built for. Many current drives use Marvell controllers . The fury was designed for budget customers, but does offer great performance when needed.

The Hyper X FURY 240GB is a fantastic solution for the price. It offers higher read performance than other current drives, and the price point is definitely positioned as a budget oriented device. The SandForce controller is a strong seller because it relies on data compression to obtain higher speeds, but at lower speeds as stated above will limit the drives abilities. Game load times are fantastic. I was able to load the new DOOM (2016) in about 5 seconds. Load times compared to a tradition hard drive were doubled. Maps loaded in about 30 seconds compared to about under a minute for the traditional hard drive. I highly recommend this drive and you can buy it now on Amazon for $80.00.
