Kingston HyperX Predator PCIe SSD Review

review by williamgayde

In recent months standard SSDs have reached the speed limit of what SATA can offer. In order to get more speed, drives need to move away and on to the PCIe bus. Kingston's Predator SSD does just this and achieves some incredible performance in the process.

The Predator comes in four different configurations which include 240/480GB and with or without the PCIe adapter. I will be reviewing the 240GB version with adapter. Being a storage device the product doesn't have too many special features. The box highlights the form factor specifications as well as the drive's incredible speed. The back of the box lists the included parts as well as an overview of what the drive is targeted at.

Here is the unit unboxed. Inside the box we find the M.2 drive with PCIe adapter, a half-height PCIe adapter, and a serial key for Acronis True Image. The predator is a very simple device. The drive slides into the adapter and is held in place with a single screw. The card then fits into a standard PCIe 4x slot.

The back is not very interesting. We can see the holes for what I believe would be different sized drives but they don't have any screw threads so I'm not entirely sure. The addition of a dark PCB is a really nice aesthetic touch. It would have been really disappointing if the drive had a green PCB but knowing Kingston, I expected nothing less. Also visible is the drive removed from the adapter.

Here is the drive itself. If your motherboard has an M.2 slot, the adapter is not necessary as the drive will plug directly in. The product sticker acts as a heat spreader so be sure not to remove it.

Here is the drive installed. It is very thin so it shouldn't conflict with any other expansion cards.

Now let's move on to performance; the real reason you're reading this review. The Predator performs outstandingly well. Note that I have the 240GB version which has lower write speeds than the 480GB, but for nearly all work cases this will not be noticeable. Starting with ATTO I noticed the drive did not perform well with very small transfer sizes but this had no affect on day to day use. The drive did achieve close to the stated results at higher transfer sizes. Kingston advertises 1400MBps reads and 600MBps writes. The read speeds were a bit slower than advertised while the write speeds were slightly faster. Heading over to AS SSD we find a very similar conclusion. The read speed is lower than advertised but the write speed is dead on. Even if I just got a bad drive, the Predator is still smoking. Earning a score of 1374 is no small feat.

Finally real world benchmarks. Compared to a standard HDD the Predator is night and day. Files open and close much faster and overall the computer just feels faster. A storage upgrade is a relatively quick and cheap way to breathe new life into an old computer. If you already have a traditional SATA SSD, an upgrade will be much less noticeable but still beneficial. I achieved boot times in the low 20 seconds for my day to day image. This isn't a stock install but rather one that is full of programs, games, and media; an image that the end user is more likely to have. This was about 10% faster than a SATA SSD which may not seem like a lot, but considering just how cheap the Predator is, it's a no brainer.

As the price of flash storage continues to fall, SSDs are becoming more and more popular. With current SSDs maxing out the speeds traditional SATA drives can offer, manufacturers have had to look elsewhere. The M.2 standard and PCIe SSDs are the answer. Kingston's Predator PCIe SSD is a great option for anyone looking to upgrade their storage. At just over $1/GB, it's hard to recommend anything else. The predator is fast, cheap, easy to set up, and should be in your PC right now.

ProsCons
Fast, Easy installation, Compact, PriceSlightly low read speeds
