Kingston HyperX 3K 240GB Upgrade Kit Review

review by williamgayde

The Kingston HyperX 3K is a solid SSD with a ton of extras.

The drive features MLC flash with a SandForce SF-2281 controller. Max speeds are 555MB/s Read, and 510MB/s Write. The drive features a max of 86,000 IOPS Read and 60,000 IOPS Write. This drive is different from the standard HyperX in the NAND that it uses. It has fewer program erase cycles than the HyperX, but that shouldn't be a problem for home users. It is slightly faster than the standard HyperX, in Write speed, but generally equivalent in Read speed.

Included in the box is the drive itself, a SATA cable, a 2.5" to 3.5" tray adapter, bootable disk image software, a screwdriver, a USB enclosure, and a USB cable.

The Upgrade Kit makes data migration very simple, although I would have liked to see the USB enclusure use USB 3.0.

Performance 5/5
The HyperX 3K 240GB is one of the highest performing SSDs I have ever looked at. Read and Writes were solid and exceeded the advertised speeds. I was able to get 557MB/s Read and 530 MB/s Write using ATTO. The drive is excellent with compressible data thanks to the SandForce controller. The only problem I found was the access time. It was nearly 10 times what I expected. Because of this, I would not recommend the drive as a cache drive. This drive delivers boot times of around 20 seconds. 3 times faster than a traditional Hard Drive

Software 4/5
The software includes bootable disk imaging software. This is useful, with the usb enclosure, for copying data from 1 hard drive to another. I did have a few issues though with copying the data from my laptop and was forced to use 3rd party software.

In conclusion, I love the Kingston HyperX 3K. It beats out most SSDs in performance, and comes with a useful upgrade kit. Retailing for about $200, the HyperX 3k 240GB is easily the best SSD for the money. I find 240GB to be plenty big enough for an OS, files, and other miscellaneous data. I would recommend this SSD to anyone looking to upgrade their storage to a blazing fast SSD. The included upgrade kit makes data transfer easy, so there is no reason not to get this SSD.

ProsCons
FAST, Included enclosure, Comes with data migration software, Looks amazingPrice
