Kingston HyperX Predator 2133Mhz 16GB(2x8GB) Mini-Review by Koniakki

review by koniakki

24/12/2013 Update details are at the bottom.

So, I got this Kingston HyperX Predator Series 16GB
(2 x 8GB) DDR3 2133Mhz (KHX21C11T2K2/16X ) kit on a good offer.

It was the only thing missing to complete my Rig. I will not write anything fancy besides my own experience in short.

In my previous Z68 Gene-Z/2600 non-K Rig I was running 8GB(2x4GB) RJX 1333CL7@1600CL8, then later RJX 16GB(2x8GB)1600CL9.

And now after I upgraded to my current 3770k/Z77 Rig, I was using my backup Ram which is a Corsair value Ram 4GB(2x2GB) 1333CL9@1600CL10 until my Predators arrive.

And they did. Quickly ripped the package as gently as a starved piranha, I briefly feasted my eyes with they pretty color combination and design/heatsinks and install them in their rightful place inside my Rig.

Fired up the XMP profile 1 which selects the kit's timings/freq of 2133Mhz@11-12-11-30-CR2. Booted fine. Run couple of benches, all looks good, no errors, hangs/freezes etc.

Back to bios, as I love overclocking and tweaking and my goal is always finding the maximum my gear can go. Within safe margins obviously.

So as I was saying, I'm back to bios now. First thing obviously to change is that "slow" CR2 to CR1. I really didn't expect it to work or anything..

Boom! Back to windows. Run a short session of quick Ram benches and off back to the bios. Preliminary results were very promising.

Back at bios. I was feeling like a hot shot so I tried 10-10-10-28-CR1. So far I have not touched the Ram voltage. It was at 1.6V at all times.

But it was a no go. Back to bios. After trying some various timings the lowest I could boot was 10-11-10-24-CR1. Booted fine. Passed the benches with flying colors..

So now I knew that my kit can do 2133Mhz@10-11-10-24-CR1. Good good. Not bad for a 11-12-11-30-CR2 kit. Not bad. I could lower the voltage a bit from the stock 1.6V but I didn't bother. I don't mind really. Will try to lower it maybe one day. Anyway, lets carry on...

I paid cheap money for this so I was really happy with its performance and running below rated timings. But then a thought passed through my devious mind.

I thought... Really? Nuh.. No way... Really? Nuh, I don't think so... No way it would work. After some 1min monologue with my self, went back to bios..

Setting timings at a loose 12-12-12-30-CR2 and frequency at 2400Mhz!! BOOM!! Booted!! After drinking half bottle of Champagne I had in the fridge which I save for special occasions, such as this, I continue with my quick benches and all is good!

I knew there's more to this Kit. It might be the fact I was seeing double but I continued to the bios. Timings 11-12-11-24-CR1 booted fine! YAY!! I ordered a Large Pizza and I opened the windows and called up a "woman"..

It's not everyday a 2133CL11 kit boots @2400CL11 with no voltage increase from stock 1.6V. So, after a whole 5min(which was a personal record for me) with that ho..err woman and 10min later the Pizza arrives. She(I think it was a she anyway) ate 3 slices and left. I ate the rest.

So fired up usual benchmarks suite(Heaven, Valley, Metro, TR, Cinebench, Aida64, and many others) with the Kingstons HyperX Predator Kit running at above advertised speed at 2400Mhz@11-12-11-24-CR1 and all finished just fine and haven't got a single Ram related error.

Well DONE Kingston.. Well done. This 2x8GB Kit (KHX21C11T2K2/16X) comes highly recommended!

24/12/2013 Update:

After half year ownership I managed to take this kit to 2600Mhz 11-13-12-30 1T. I plain love this ram.

ProsCons
Fast solid performance, Running higher than rated speeds at same Voltage and weirdly a bit lower Timings, good latencies, good build and nice looking!Non really. I cannot find anything wrong. Others might find some. I didn't tho.
