Amazing Sounds for A Very Low Price

review by droviin

Koss ProDJ100 December 2014

Koss has made some snazzy headphones. These fit right into the group of headphones recommended for their quality. Being in Milwaukee, I've tried many of Koss's products from their low end ear buds to the Porta-Pros. These are the first "high-end" headphones by them that I've tried for an extended length of time. So far, I'm very impressed. My initial impression is that they do a great job bringing out the vocals and melody of the music as well as the weapon and shouts in games.

I received these headphones as a gift and have been extensively using them for music and gaming. These have been solely used via my computer, which only uses onboard sound. I do not use a DAC or amp that's driving these headphones. In fact, these headphones are plugged into my keyboards audio through-port. This is the same arrangement as the headphones that I'm comparing them to: Skullcandy Heavy Metal and Corsair 1300. I should also point out that while I listen to, and perform a lot of music, I'm not that well versed in the jargon. As such, my review may be a bit meandering while trying to convey the point.

These headphones are a wonderful change of pace from gaming headsets and earbuds. It's been a long time since I've had a setup that did a great job on gaming and music. Usually, the audio equipment tends to do one or the other far better. I'll mention both sides of these headphones briefly.

Musically, these headphones are great. These are able to reproduce concert performances very well; it's better than some concert hall seats in fact. Each instrument or voice is clear. I can pick out different chorus voices, the different guitars, etc.; and it's incredibly easy. In the past, I could identify the instruments, but it was harder to pick out the individual ones. With the ProDJ100s, each personality, voice, instrument-track comes through clearly. Even harmonies sound better as the individual characteristics of the voices come through better. I've been harping about the clarity because I'm so struck by it. In the past, what I thought was good, was merely acceptable.

While the clarity is amazing, the range of music that it can reproduce is great. Where the headphones shine brightest is when there isn't a 'wall of sound' but distinct sounds, things like orchestral, blues, folk, jazz, low-fi, and symphonic metal all are reproduced very well. Fortunately, this is predominantly what I listen to. When the music space gets saturated, the headphones aren't so amazing; they are good, but not great. The vocals and main melody instruments really benefit the most from these headphones. Given that the mid-ranges are well emphasized, the voices are super clear; how the singers work from the little vibratos to the little slides, are shown well. It's like being given a little private concert. The guitars get the same benefit, it's very lifelike, where I even notice the pick striking each string of a chord, just like my own playing. The overall experience is crisp and clear with the little details that make a live performance so enjoyable (without all the bar noise).

For gaming, I've really tried two games: Dirt 3 and Warframe, predominantly the latter. In Dirt 3 I feel that the sounds add to the experience. It's always nice to hear the engine rev on the starting line, with the little tire squeal as you launch into the race. I didn't get an engine roar like I had the subwoofer hooked up, but it was enjoyable regardless. The lack of bottom range was most noticeable in this game. In Warframe, a game with less bass, the headphones did a better job. I like to run solo stealth missions, sound is terribly important to me. With these headphones I was able to accurately tell where enemies where. I could accurately tell the number and position of the enemies that I encountered. The mess of battle was made messier by the distinct cutting and gunfire sounds coming through. This game became much more fun due to the improved sound.

These headphones have also replaced my headset. Many people in this forum have advocated abandoning headsets, but I have always disregarding the message in the favor of convenience. These headphones provide all of the great sound that I've discussed, and can easily have the famous Zalaman mic clip onto the cord. The isn't much a convenience difference between the headset and headphones. From here on out, I won't buy headsets.

The biggest problem I have with these headphones is how the high ranges seem to slowly fall off. They are there, but seem distant. Some bands that like to play on the higher end and some orchestra pieces lose their richness when a solo or melody is carried on the high end of the spectrum. The lower end doesn't have this problem anywhere near as noticeably. The bass isn't super punchy, but it's very much there. The bass kicks are mellowed, but definitely there. Some might like that vibration, but the tone is clear so I don't miss it much. Even when listening to taiko drum music I don't feel like anything is missing besides that severe 'shock' of the beat.

The other thing I notice is that source quality matters a lot. I'm not sure if this is a byproduct of better equipment or to the headphones, but if there is any static or compression artifacts, I notice. This is very different than what I'm used to. Most of my music is MP3 with v2 or v0 VBR encoding, but some of my CDs are still 160k CBR. I hear popping and static in the background that definitely was smoothed over on my other headphones. While I've been slowly migrating all my MP3s to the v0 encoding, if I had to suddenly do all of them I would've been annoyed. I really don't like listening to the lower quality MP3s although I still like the songs.

Overall, these are some great headphones. While there may be superior headphones available, I find it unlikely that they will be as inexpensive as the Koss ProDJ100. The quality is far better than what most people need and is edging into audiophile territory. Given that I had been picking up headphones (and headsets unfortunately) in the price range, but haven't had this experience, I can honestly suggest that everyone who's willing to put a bit of money into their sound will certainly benefit from these headphones.
