Packaging

The packaging is great, tightly packed so nothing moves around. The exterior packaging itself is a full colored sleeve going over one smaller interior package. This outer shell has all the product details along with Identification on the model received.

Content

The full content of this product is a power brick, VESA mount, screws for said VESA mount and the ECS Liva Z Plus itself. Simple with no frills.

Power Brick

Product page - This is a brick specially designed for low power PC systems with an efficiency equal or above 85%.

Top finish

The top has a really nice, although easily scratchable surface. It's a mix of matte and glossy circular patterns and the Liva logo. Really neat, but there's a big chance you won't be seeing this much anyways.

System ports

The connectivity on this small PC is good for its size. We have three USB 3.1 Type A ports and one Type C. On the back side, we have a mini display port, HDMI, two LAN ports and the power barrel port.

Two LAN ports? Does this mean it could be used as a router? Indeed it does!

Identification sticker and VESA

The bottom sticker has all applicable information about the unit. There are two VESA points on the unit itself, since it's so light, it's more than enough.

Bottom removal, PCB exposed

When we remove the bottom portion of the case, we can see the the swappable parts of the Mini PC itself, the Wifi card, the SSD and the RAM slots. These slots are all populated by default on this model except one RAM slot.

SSD, WiFi/BT card and RAM

The WiFi/BT card and SDD are stacked on a combo connector, which helps save room on the PCB, the RAM slots are regular laptop style SODIMM connectors. This makes it so that any upgrade should be quite easy.

All the thermal paste!

When removing the PCB, I was curious to see how the thermal paste under the heatsink looked like, I was surprised to see so much applied. This does not really affect performance since it had a very thin consistency. I replaced the paste with some MX4 (in a small quantity too).

The heatsink

Here is the single heat pipe cooler. Remember, this is a 15W chip, let's hope it can do it's job

The heatsinks fan and top shell

The top shell has a blower style fan attached to it to provide airflow to the small heatsink fins. The only problem I'm seeing right off the bat is that air intaked is right above the CPU, thus could possible be intaking hotter than needed air.

Testing and upgrading

Here is my CPU-Z validation. From this screen shot, you can see that I have an engineering sample. This is what the stock highest end configuration will be, but since this is OCN, I will not be leaving it this way
smile.gif

Performance Testing, I won't go too much in detail, I'll just leave the results speak for themselves (It's just that impressive). I have included some stock benchmarks, as well as my "upgraded" score. I upgraded the RAM to a kit of Kingston Impact 2*4GB 2400/14 to be able to see performance increase with faster RAM.
CPU-Z 1.78.3 Benchmark score (Kill-A-Watt reading : 25W)
Single thread CPU-Z : 1491
Multi thread CPU-Z : 3968

SSD per ATTO Disk Benchmark
Read : 560 MB/s (Specifications state 560MB/s)
Write : 206 MB/s (Specifications state 460MB/s) (Chipset limitation?)

XTU results (Kill-A-Watt reading : 40W)
Note : Profile created in XTU includes all limits removed or increased as much as possible.
470 XTU Marks - Transcend 2400/17 1*4GB
613 XTU Marks - Kingston Impact 2*4GB 2400/14

A score of 613 marks on XTU matches the performance of a Skylake i3 6100. Pretty impressive. The bad? I'm thermal throttling a few times during the benchmark (100?C limit)

Time Spy
401 marks
My 7870K@4.5GHz with 1866-10 RAM scored 661 marks at 120 watts, so 60% of the performance of a A10-7870K with only 20% of the power (25W under load) and many times smaller footprint. Epic.

Conclusion

I've been using this system non-stop since the date of the CPU-Z validation (month and a half now) and honestly, I have nothing bad to say about it. The heatsink is able to cool this chip at stock configurations and even upgraded (except with XTU limit modifications). The design is great, upgradability is easy, mounting is easy, super small form factor.

I'd easily recommend this unit to anyone in the market for such a computer. Really great product ECS, really, really!

I hope you enjoyed my review, if you want more benchmarks of anything, send me a PM and I'll bench this unit as much as you'd like and add results

[OCN Labs] ECS Liva Z Plus

review by duality92
Nice review. Interesting product, I would've been really interested in this little box if only it had HDMI 2.0 support instead of 1.4. Afaik Kaby Lake supports HDMI 2.0 so the problem is not on Intel's side.

And about the Transcend SSD:
Quote:Write : 206 MB/s (Specifications state 460MB/s) (Chipset limitation?)
That is not because of a chipset limitation, write speed is simply lower because of the smaller 128GB size compared to the 256GB one
