Clean picture, good software, but with some shortcomings

review by daclownie

In the quest for a decent webcam, I surveyed many a site, and many a review, but found the same resounding information for almost all of them: They suck. To be honest, for the money, none of them do video much better than your cell phone (if it supports 720p/1080p, mind you), none of them do audio recording better than your cell phone, and they all have various other short comings that can't really be tackled unless you start dipping into the highly priced video realm. That all being said, I figured it was time to take the plunge, find the overall quality/price winner, and order it from Amazon so that I was at least backed by an excellent return policy.

The web cam itself is quite nice, really. It has a nice solid feel, though being a bit wide and bulky, and only folding marginally. This does make it a non-travel friendly solution. The video quality is nice, and the software does provide many options that allow you to customize the use of your webcam. If you fine tune the settings manually, you can really get some amazing low light and bright light results, and the zoom works as good as a digital zoom can. The problems do lie in when you use the "automatic" settings for this known as "Right Light". Right light makes for laggy and motion blurred recording that I found way below par and was immediately left disabled. The audio quality is ok, and I can understand their thinking for putting the secondary microphone for "noise cancellation" but there are some major flaws with doing that on a web cam typically perched on top of your desk or monitor. The most glaring and apparently obvious flaw is... most computers are positioned in a way that the back of the webcam would be facing a wall. Doesn't really eliminate much noise from that nonexistent side of the room.

The inability to rotate the webcam on the base is also kind of a weird non-option. Many webcams... well... actually just about ALL of them at this point and even a bit lower allow for rotation of the webcam on the base, this one does not. I found this a bit strange and it really limits some of the angles you can attain without threading it onto a standard tripod (which it does have the threading for). The other strange thing is not coming with a USB extension like many of Logitech's lower offerings. This has a 6' cable, no extender. Luckily for me, this was just enough to get this working properly for me where I wanted it (kind of, see my point about not allowing rotation on the base) but any further away and I would have been a bit SOL and forced to spend an additional $5-10 on an extension cable.

TL;DR:

Pro:
Good webcam. Clean picture. Decent sound. Good software. Good build quality. Windows 8/8.1 support

Con:
No rotation on base. Short USB cable. Noise cancellation is useless. Right light creates motion blur and lag/delay.

That being said? I'd recommend it if you need a decent product for a decent price.

ProsCons
Clear image, good software, good build quality, plug and play, Windows 8/8.1 supportNo swivel, only halfway decent microphone

Logitech C920 Unboxing and First Look

review by wondermutt

I recently purchased the Logitech C920 to use on my YouTube channel, and while it is a better webcam than any I've used before, I still think the image quality could be better. So far I'm happy with it, just wish it was a touch clearer. Other than that, I'm really happy with it.

Check out my unboxing and first look below for more details.

ProsCons
Decent video quality, Full 1080P captureAudio quality is very subpar, video quality could be better
