Amazing cooler!

review by ayymd

Alright, since this is my first review ever, it'll probably be fairly basic. I also don't have any professional sound equipment, so I can only give a comparison of other noises.

Test System Used

  • CPU: AMD FX-8350 (OC: 4.6GHz @ 1.49V)
  • Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 R2.0
  • Memory: Kingston HyperX FURY 16GB
  • GPU: Sapphire R9 280x Tri-X TOXIC (OC: 1200/1700MHz)
  • Case: Cooler Master HAF X
  • PSU: Corsair HX750
  • Software: SpeedFan / Prime95 / CPU-Z / Windows 10 Professional

Installation

The installation was really nice if you get it on correctly, which at first, I didn't get it on, and it was seriously hitting my 24-pin connector. But don't even get me started on the RAM clearance on this monster. When it's installed correctly, it doesn't hover over the first RAM slot. Since this cooler is very wide, it actually nearly hits my rear 140mm Cougar Vortex. If you're wondering how easy is it to install, here's what I say: Read the instruction manual when you're first installing it, and you should be good to go for as long as you have it. I'm able to install this thing mindlessly now, it's that simple. Thermalright's mounting system earned my 10 as easily as installing their cooler was.

Noise Level

This thing is always inaudible, thanks to Thermalright's amazing 800 RPM fans. They do a great job of moving air and still being silent. I'd say they are like an uglier be quiet! fan or a nicer looking Noctua fan. The only downside is that they're 3-pin, but that doesn't matter to me because they're always going to run at 800RPM. My loudest component is seriously my R9 280x, but it rarely needs to spin up the fans due to the custom fan profile my friend put on it to compliment that glorious Tri-X TOXIC cooling, so it really goes well with my overall build. This cooler can probably get a perfect 10.

Performance

The performance is, in all honesty, ridiculous. I've never, ever, ever in my life seen my 8350 as cold as it is, it's always below 50c, whether under load or idling. The thermal paste included is comparable to the likes of Noctua, Phanteks, or CRYORIG's, and it tastes pretty good. Wait, what? Ignore that last part; I don't eat thermal paste. I recently tested with Prime95, and after 15 minutes, my CPU maxed out at 42C. Overclocked, it got around 48C, which isn't half-bad. I would give this cooler a 20, but the limit is 10, so 10.

Aesthetics

While aesthetics are subjective, what I personally think of this cooler is that it is thankfully not a spaceship like some coolers (cough Cooler Master V8 GTS cough), and it keeps the simplistic theme, much like Noctua, be quiet!, CRYORIG, Phanteks, and even Scythe. Thanks for not making a spaceship, Thermalright. This cooler gets an easy 9 here.

Closing

All in all, this cooler was a great choice that my friend picked out for me. He somehow knew that it would be easy to install, perform well, and be silent, despite there not being a single review of it on the Internet. To think that I nearly chose anything else is absurd. For less than $60, this cooler is a God-tier monstrosity.
Scoring

  • Performance (40% of the score): 10
  • Noise Level (30% of the score): 10
  • Installation (20% of the score): 10
  • Aesthetics (10% of the score): 9
  • Final Score: 9.9 / 10

Update! I have since switched my case to the NZXT S340, and this cooler is barely too tall, and it also made it so I don't have a rear fan. Just a warning for anyone wanting to buy this cooler, make sure your case will support it.

ProsCons
Quiet, great price, great performance, etcBig, weirdly sized fans, practically no included thermal paste (sad)
