Decent mouse if you can find one cheap

review by dmills

So i got this mouse for work, it was 55$ on amazon. I've bought quite a number of mice recently and this one is probably in the top 5. Don't be mistaken, there are two other editions of the Rat, mark 3 and mark 7. This one is the middle-ground of the series and it does take good and bad from both of the other versions. The weight system was what initially caught my eye when i was choosing mice. I prefer a heavy mouse as have large hands and don't like the cheap "clappy" feel of the unweighted ones.

Another reason I chose the RAT 5 over the 3 was because the horizontal scrollwheel interested me for photoshop & other programs, but believe me it is incredibly useless. Not only does the RAT software suck and the horizontal scrollwheel unsupported by nearly ALL apps i've tried it in, its also way too far back on the mouse to be of any use, even for gaming i don't think its placed well. You have to remove your index finger for your thumb to reach it, otherwise its very awkward to use.

Another con is that the left side of the mouse--the browser nav buttons--is also non-adjustable. That is only available on the RAT 7 (all they added was a slit in the aluminum body so the tiny screws can shift, complete crock for that price difference--could be modded in if desired).

All i can say is that i enjoy the parts of the mouse i actually use--the middle mousewheel, left & right click, and browser buttons. The left & right click are very crisp and have almost 0 dead-zone, which is very nice. Though the sides aren't adjustable, I don't think I would actually need it as the mouse fits my fingers perfectly as-is. middle mousewheel is very smooth & isn't overly stiff or loose.

I would normally recommend the RAT 3, but since it's almost the exact same price for less features its junk. RAT line isn't bad but their software is crap and won't work with default windows drivers, which is just a personal pet peeve. I really wouldn't recommend this mouse at 70$, at 50 or 60 maybe. If you're in the market for anew mouse and you want it for gaming, there are better alternatives

ProsCons
Changeable weights, palm of the body is adjustable, decent sized buttons, smooth middle wheel, good sensorpalm doesn't tilt, useless horizonal scrollwheel, browser buttons too far back & are non-adjustable
