I purchased this webcam a while ago, just before upgrading monitors. I'd had enough of the novelty Simpsons affair I had at the time, and I found this webcam online for ?11 (exchange rate in price paid field is valid as of 11/11/11). At the time I hadn't had many Microsoft peripherals before, but trusted the name and went ahead with it.
When it arrived, the design of the webcam struck me. It is a matte gunmetal/black unit with a metal piece of the focusing ring drawing attention to the rest of the design. This will fit in well with any silver or black monitors and setups. It does look quite stylish sat on top of my glossy LG monitor as I write this review.
The webcam came with the LifeCam software CD, which included software not compatible with Windows 7 (This was purchased about 18 months after Windows 7 came out). However, downloading the new software from the Microsoft website was easy. All I had to do was download and install the software, and plug it in, and it worked fine. However, the interface of the LifeCam software was a bit too clunky for my tastes, and from Microsoft, I expected a better UI and quicker performance from the software.
Initial call quality was good. I frequently found the webcam to be clearer than the ones integrated into my HP laptop and netbook, and people I video called could see and hear me clearly. Setup with Windows Live Messenger was simple, as was setup with Skype.
Occasionally, though, in a dark situation, red pixels seem to be stuck on the webcam output. These go away after about a minute, but it is a minor annoyance. This affects both of the cameras I own. Oh, did I forget to mention that I was so pleased with the VX-3000 that I purchased another one for my workshop PC?
All in all, I am a big fan of the VX-3000. It has its downsides, yes, but overall as a product, I would recommend them. I don't believe you can get video quality like this for less.
Pros
Cons
Good quality, easy to install, good styling, nice Microsoft build quality
LifeCam software is a bit bloaty, occasional stuck red pixels, not plug and play on Windows 7
Got a deal at futureshop 2 for $60, got them for my sister and myself.
They work pretty well, I mean for $30 you're getting what you paid for, decent all around. If you're looking for a cam to buy, but don't really care for quality if you're just using it for Skype or what have you, this is a good choice.
Pros
Cons
Super cheap, decent quality, mic works well
Feels like it can break easily
