NZXT S340- The best budget case?

review by nomadskid

The NZXT S340 is a wonderful case. It has a minimalist look to it. Which is a plus for some, I personally saw it as a blank canvas which screwed to be painted or airbrushed. It comes in a very reasonable price of 69.99 on Newegg at the time of this review. At this price point, I believe that this is quite possibly the best case available.

Here is why

It's roomy

It has ample room for the average user and supports up to 7 expansion cards ( meaning 3 way SLI or Xfire)

It can make a cluttered build look clean

, It comes with a pre-installed power supply shroud, which makes it very easy to hide your cable clutter. There are no grommets in this case, which some may see as a problem. Instead of grommets, there is a long metal cutout which hides all of your cabling

It can fit enough storage

. The case has two 2.5 inch SSD bays as well as two 3.5 inch HDD bays. The SSDs can be shown off on top of the pre-installed power supply shroud, while the HDDs are hidden underneath. Cable cutouts are very well placed for running your SATA power and Data cables to all drives.

It runs cool

The case has ample airflow and features 3 140mm fan mounts as well as a single 120mm rear exhaust fan(the case comes with two 120mm fans pre-installed)

Swapping components is a breeze

Due to the case's roomy design, it is very easy to change out components such as expansion cards, and graphics cards. It also features a large CPU cutout which made it very easy to install my aftermarket heatsink.

It's got a window

It has a very well mounted acrylic window for showing off your killer components

However, as great as this case is it does have a few minor flaws for some.

Only 7 expansion slots

This flaw is for you Mr. Quad Crosfire + wireless card + sound card, unfortunately there is not enough room for a crazy set up in this case, but it's a mid tower: what did you expect.
No 5.25 inch bays
This is not the case for the avid Cd-DVD-Bluray user. We now live in the age of digital distribution and NZXT is catering to those people. However all hope is not lost, You can still purchase a USB based reader for your disk based media

Allin all the NZXT S340 is a fantastic case for the money. It's 90% steel in it's construction, it feels like it will last, and it offers some killer features. It is because of these reasons, that I believe the NZXT S340 is the best budget case under $80

ProsCons
-Roomy -Tons of airflow - great cable management -price -retained side panel screws-not for the enthusiast -no 5.25 bays

Amazingly clean design and superb functionality at a fraction of the price of higher end cases!

review by pharcyide

After spending the last 8 years being fairly happy with my old Antec 900 case, I decided to upgrade. This was due in part because of the horrible cable management my old case had. Being that cable management was a huge issue, this was one of the main problems I wanted to solved with a new case. After researching a few weeks I decided on a white NZXT S340. At the price point its sold at with the features it comes with and the overall clean look, i couldnt find anything else that could beat it. I also knew I wanted to get rid of my AIO and go full custom loop and I wanted a big window to show everything off without seeing a ton of cables from hard drives, etc.

Upon opening the box I could feel that this case was very well put together. The 90% steel construction can be felt in the weight of it, which I like. Everything was well-packged in styrofoam and plastic and it arrived with no scratches or dings in it after shipping from Newegg. It comes with (2) 120mm fans (one for intake in the back and one for exhaust up top). You also have the option of mounting (2) additional fans in the front in either 120 or 140mm. It also includes (2) top USB 3.0 ports, white LED power button ring, magnetic fan cover up front (cheaper one on the bottom for the psu). The hard drive space is only accessible by removing the side panel which I like and the case cannot fit a cd/dvd drive. Not a big deal since I always use USB and you can always purchase an external USB cd/dvd drive if you really need the functionality. It comes with a flat black inside with a psu cover and a unique white cable management bar to hide cables.

I noticed there is only about a 1 inch wide by 7-8 inch long slit at the top and bottom on the front panel to allow air to flow through. When you remove the panel, you will see about a 2-3 degree drop. Easily fixable by unscrewing the plastic panel behind the steel front plate and adding some brackets and magents (if you wanted to increase airflow a bit). The only other feature I wish they would have added is a second 140mm fan bracket to the top.

The case itself is very easy to work with. Tons of room and slots to run cables through. Overall, I cannot be more impressed with how clean my build looks compared to my old Antec 900. At this price, you don't usually see features like a psu cover or unique ways to hide cables like the very simple cable management bar. The case has allowed me to install a full custom loop including a Nemesis Black Ice 280GTS rad up front and 120 rad in back along with my reservoir, pump, flow meter, hoses, and a gpu block which is being installed within the next month.

Conclusion? This is the best $70 ive spent on an upgrade in a long time. Overall I couldnt be more happy with the case or pleased with how my build looks. If you're looking for a case that can provide you with a very compact and clean look at a low price, I would highly recommend taking a look at the S340, which comes in White, Blue, Red, Black, and a limited edition Razer edition in Green. If you buy one, don't forget to join the NZXT S340 fan club here on overclock.net! There is a ton of great information and resources in the club's thread. (Sorry for the crap pictures. I'm using my phones camera and it sucks)

ProsCons
Unique cable management, PSU cover, clean design, large window, Plenty of space for AIO or Custom Loops for liquid cooling, Steel constructionRestricted airflow in front panel (easy to mod/fix). No slot for ODD (who uses cd/dvd drives anyways?)
