Philips 288P6LJEB 4K Monitor Review

review by williamgayde

As 4k continues to advance and the price of a decent panel continues to fall, the technology becomes more and more available to the masses. Philips has released what looks to be promising new monitor at a very competitive price. Today we will see if that is true.

Here is the box and its contents. The monitor was packaged well with decent hard foam. It should be well protected during shipping. Inside the box we find the monitor, base, and cables.

The base comes detached but installation is easy. There is a plethora of included cables. Starting from the top and moving clockwise we have a DisplayPort cable, a power cable, a DVI cable, an HDMI cable, an audio cable, and a VGA cable. I would much rather have seen a USB cable for the included hub instead of a VGA cable, but the DisplayPort cable is a nice touch. Overall I am pleased.

Let?s move our focus on to monitor now. The bezels and monitor housing are made of a matte black plastic and are reasonably small. The metal plate provides a solid base for the monitor. Looking directly at the back of the monitor we don't find much. There is a small cutout at the base of the stand for cable management which I really appreciated.

Rotating the monitor to see the viewer's right side we find the 4 port USB hub and power switch. Two of the ports are USB 2.0 and the other two are USB 3.0. The yellow port is a quick charging port as well. On to the main I/O now. We find, from left to right, an AC input, a DVI port, an HDMI port with MHL support, DisplayPort 1.2 , a VGA port, a headphone output, and an audio input port. Realistically the only input you should be using is DisplayPort since HDMI does not support 4k at 60Hz. All of the I/O is at a right angle which makes cable management very easy. Located below the video ports are two vents for cooling.

As expected the included speakers aren?t great. They sound better than typical monitor speakers but still sound overwhelmingly tinny and hollow. If you are going to be using a monitor in this class, you will definitely want to look into some better quality speakers.

The monitor stand allows for a wide array of adjustment. The monitor can be raised 150mm or 6", pivoted 90 degrees to portrait mode, swiveled left and right 65 degrees, and tilted up and down 20 degrees. There is a little bit of wobble but nothing to worry about.

The display is beautiful. The colors are vibrant without being washed out or oversaturated. While I don't have the necessary equipment to do an objective color analysis, I didn't notice very many major issues. The only noteworthy things were a slightly low contrast ratio and a slight lack of depth in the blacks. For a TN panel, the color performance is pretty darn good.

Here are some 4K sample shots

The on screen display was easy to navigate as well. Instead of traditional tactile buttons, the 288P6LJEB opts for touch sensitive ones instead. This can make accidentally pressing them easier, but shouldn't really be a problem. Switching inputs, the most common task, is right at the top where it should be. Scrolling down we find picture settings, picture-in-picture options, basic audio options, detailed color options, and advanced setup.

In terms of viewing angles, the 288P6LJEB has room to improve. They aren't bad but considering the category of this monitor, I would have expected slightly better. Vertical tilt is fine in a normal usage range, but once you go past that the image quality deteriorates rapidly. Here is the same image from above. Notice how the contrast at the top of the monitor disappears and fades to almost black.

Horizontal viewing angles were much better but still not the best. Past about 30 degrees there is a greenish shift in the image.

Not let's move on to what I would consider the monitor's greatest weakness: response time. The input lag is significant and most likely noticeable. The monitor is still perfectly usable for productivity or content consumption as a slow response time won't make much of a difference. When it comes to gaming though, the 288P6LJEB just can't keep up. If you are in the market for a 4K gaming monitor, please look elsewhere. It would be a poor choice and you are better off with another monitor. When compared side by side with a non-4K monitor, the results are rather alarming. The Philips was almost a full 70ms slower. Like I said previously, this is only a major concern for gaming. If you don't plan on gaming you shouldn't encounter any problems.

In conclusion, the Philips 288P6LJEB is a great monitor for the money. Coming in at around $450, it is situated on the lower priced end of 4K monitors. While response time, viewing angles, and contrast could use some refining, the monitor is a solid contender overall. It's not for a gamer or for content creators who need absolute color accuracy, but it does make a compelling choice for the home user. I have no problems at all recommending this monitor.

ProsCons
Great picture quality, Good color reproduction, Wide range of connectivity, PriceResponse time, Viewing angles, Minor contrast issues
