Pros: Big Battles, Fun community, A sandbox like FPS where anything can happen from the player by the players. Lots of things to kill and explore.
Cons: Game balance and Server performance issues leaves alot to be desired by many. No true victory condition for those that desire it.
Planetside 2 is a Free to Play MMOFPS, an ambitious game aimed to bringing an FPS experience to new heights. Similar to Battlefield series, gameplay varies from Infantry gunplay to vehicles and aircraft. At first I thought it was just another typical FPS game till I gave it a try. As far as my 2 year experience goes back. I remember when I was just a lone player; thinking he can take on the world alone. Boy I was wrong, from getting stomped by hordes of enemy players to epic defensive/offensive firefights racking up K/Ds. I've learned playing alone was doing it wrong. Forming friendship with other players and Outfits took time though in the end it continues to drive me to keep playing this game.
For those new to the game, starting out from BR1 alone can be a intimidating start. Problem lies with encountering experienced players that have an equipment and skill advantage over new players (Giving the feeling its almost or like Pay to Win situation to victims). There are plenty of guides to get people familiar to the game mechanics to tactics to be used to give yourself the upper hand against experienced players. As what many skilled players stressed is to never play alone. The worst that can happen is running mindlessly with a crowd of random friendlies; only to get repeatedly farmed by your adversaries that stages the tactical advantage over you and the surroundings. There are plenty of outfits that welcome new players to advanced and skilled outfits that utilize intelligence, skill, and organization to overcome hordes of enemies regardless of sizes. Getting the best out of the game is to forming a crew, whether small or big; getting together on getting things done such as doing OPs ranging to combined arms to vehicle columns to support the fight of your faction while increasing your survival rate.
Apart from the fun; ups and downsides come and go. As obvious, the game doesn't have true victory condition, even with the recently added Continental Lock. Fights continue perpetually with small/major victories rewarding experience points. Ongoing weapon balance changes from faction to faction can leave alot to be desired amongst the playerbase of the game. In the current state of the game can sometime be unplayable at random times of day. Ongoing server to client side issues needs to be addressed. Lack of promised scheduled content make people come and go.
With the recent number events that has happened with the development team leaves an interesting and somewhat bleak future of what we know as Daybreak Games, formerly SOE.
In the end if it weren't for friends and outfits from BAID, HIVE, Recursion, AFX and the drunk folks at HMRD. I'd probably left the game ages ago. I'll continue to play this game until the game shuts down or the community I play with moves on to other games. It was a blast and well done investment I've put into this regardless of the ongoing pitfalls experienced so far.
